Instead of warming up, baseball pitchers now take a sauna, go to the mound and find they pitch a better game. Why is the sauna becoming so popular? Because its such a delightful way to wash. Instead of scrubbing themselves furious ly, bathers relax in the sauna room while stones are heated until the room temperature reaches 190 degrees. Too hot, you say? The difference is that this is dry hot air with no humidity to cause discomfort. Beauty and the bath became inseparable when Poppes Sabina, Empress of ancient Rome, took numerous milk baths to assure herself of continued loveliness. And during the golden years of Louis XIVs reign, French beauties poured such exotic additions as strawberries or wine into the bath water. Along with the dunking came the dousing a deluge of refreshing water the shower. The idea started when Ancient Greeks stood under overflowing fountains to cool off on hot days. And soon, showers were making a big splash in Roman times. Whether a hot bath or tepid, steam bath or cold shower, every culture has its own way of washing. The Turks found therapeutic value in steam baths and luxuriated in the humid air. Ancient Romans took warm mud baths- paradoxically jumping into the dirt to cleanse themselves by means of its abrasive action. After these stimulating bath and shower rituals, the Puritan-inspire- d Saturday night bath of America seemed routine. And it got more routine! Although Americans were bathing r r showering more than once a week, they were enjoying it less. Now, aware Americans are taking a leaf from the Northern book of bathing and discovering how the Finns put fun into cleansing. Its the surprising sauna. Saunas are springing up all over the country where people are tired of the old soak and scrub in the tub or the rapid rinse of the shower. To banish that tired feeling, executives are installing sauna suites in their offices and architects are now drawing sauna rooms in the plans of apartment buildings. And besides the fun of it all, many people are using saunas for their beneficial effects. At the South Pole, men stationed in Little America take a daily sau After Your kitchen is a potential spected periodically by a qualified repairman. Shoes Prove Recently, two policemen were transporting a prisoner using a vehicle which had no partition separating the front and back seats. Suddenly, the prisoner produced a razor blade, pressed it to the drivers throat, and demanded that he pull the car off the road. As the prisoner disarmed the officers, they attempted to regain control of the situation. In the ensuing struggle,' one officer was shot and the other received a deep cut on his hand before the prisoner was brought under control. Subsequent investigation determined that the prisoner had secreted the razor blade between two layers of leather in a shoe sole. The shoes were the ones taken from him at the time of his incarceration but returned to him to wear during the trip. F.B.I. COMMERCIAL Fair Friendly Are These the Pappas Girls?
