Our Hats Off to 4-- H n, Clubs Conservation of natural resources is like God and motherhood. We all believe in it but many of us take it for granted. But there is a growing group of people, both young and old, who have quit saying, Let George do it, and are doing something about the problem themselves. conservation of natural These are the people active in the resources program who have banded together to work on a country4-- wide basis. The system usually works like this: The various local groups in the county meet and decide a program in conservation is necessary in their communities. The junior leaders and their advisers contact other local groups and invite them to aid in the conservation program. In nearly all cases the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, community and civic groups willingly join in the program. The young people contact various community officials, clear the way for specific programs, alert their respective communities to what they are trying to do and then do it. For instance: An educational program is conducted to teach the youngsters how to cope with the problems of todays environment and prepare a course of action to improve local areas. basis. The second START weekThe program is on a long-terend is planned for April where a major beautification and conservation effort will be implemented with all the groups participating. Promotion is held on a "Community Pride Program where clubs may conduct roadside cleanups, build trash cans for parks and roadsides, build brush shelters and windbreaks for wildlife bird sanctuaries, plant trees, promote bike pathways and encourage bike riding to reduce air pollution. Plans are being made to continue and strengthen existing program areas in conservation. Youngsters can learn to appreciate their surroundings; recognize natural resources, learn about the interdependence of natural resources; the values of trees and birds and mans dependence upon them; learn how pollution affects our lives; learn about career opportunities or hobbits in conservation and witness first-han- d good and bad conservation practices. This broad program should have the support and cooperation of community, civic and church groups. John Deere is sponsor of the conservation of natural resources program and provides a $50 cash award for one county in each state reporting the most outstanding conservation program. The company also provides additional support including an expense-pai- d trip to the National Congress in Chicago for state winners and six educational scholarships of $700 each to national winners. listening to speakers. STARTER SOLUTION When transplanting seedlings of either flowers or vegetables it is a good idea to use a start- er" solution to water them with instead of plain water. You can make a starter by diluting any liquid fertilizer or dissolving any crystalline one to the strength stated on the package. The usual solution has one ounce of starter mixed with one gallon of water dilute enough to cause no damage. How permissive can college governments be in the face of demonstrations and physical coercion ? How permissive can government be in the face of violence and rioting? How permissive can parents be in the face of criminal behavior by their children? How permissive can police be in the face of old-time- n; 21 ST DIES MARCH . . . Permissiveness Sometimes you may wonder how the accumulated fortunes which laid the foundations for many of the businesses and other enterprises that make this a successful community. There are many contributing factors, but some we are inclined to overlook. For instance, in horse and buggy days, a trip of a few milts, or 20 or more, could be made with little expense and practically no consideration about taxes. But today, we travel in modern high speed cars, over roads we have been taxed to build; or toll roads that are being paid with taxes; the auto in which we travel is registered for a license fee; the person at the wheel pays a license to operate the vehicle; he pays several cents in taxes on every gallon of gas and oil consumed ; if he stops in a modern town or city, a mechanical device at the curb requires the payment of a few pennies for a parking privilege; the roads and streets he travels on must be kept in repair by taxation. All these things are essential to modern living, but they contribute materially to the rising cost of operating a home or main- children; three two brothers, M. Ito and S. One of the reasons permissiveness has become the subject of a major debate is that twenty and thirty years ago many mothers were sold the permissive line by psychiatrists the line that junior shouldnt be frustrated, that parents shouldnt say no to darling junior. No doubt, many parents have the negative but In the new creed, millions went too far with permissiveness, and in many cases little junior of twenty years ago has grown into a fullblown monster. District Atty.-GeRichard Kleindienst believes the decline of crime in Washington, the greatly reduced violence on college campuses, the better atmosphere all over the country, as compared to conditions existing twro years ago, is a result of less permissiveness in the Justice Department. Someone must enforce the law until it is changed, even if some laws should be improved. SIRS.
