Last Friday, Kearns made believers of the Granger Lancers Lundell 79-6- Brad Beel and Kerry Rupp were a pair of blond bombers as they scored 23 and 22 points, respectively, in blasting the Tooon Tuesday ele Buffaloes, 79-6afternoon, Feb. 2, at Cyprus High School. The win shoved the , Pirate crew into undisputed second place in division two standings behind Kearns High, the opponent for a Feb. 12 televised game at Kearns. Beel and Rupp also led their team in rebounding. Beel hauled down five rebounds from the offensive board and 14 on the defensive board for a total of 19. Kerry Rupp got a total of 18 rebounds with 8 on the offensive boards and 10 on the defensive boards. The Pirate team outrebounded Tooele, 54 to 24. Thats 30 more rebounds in the game, 10 on the offensive board and 20 on the 4-- 5-- 1. 3, as they defeated them, The Kearns loss to Cyprus in the second game of the season was the only defeat the Cougars have suffered in division play. Both Cyprus and Judge Memorial played well last Friday as the Pirates fought off a Bulldog comeback to win the game. 77-5- 6. Brad Beel, Ted Angell and Doug Perkins built up a 0 lead before Judge got on the score-boarjust about the same way the Pirates went out in lead in that first game of the division 7-- d, play against Judge. But then Barber led the Bulldogs right back as he kept driving under the basket for layup shots. The Bulldogs tried a full court press early in that first quarter but the Pirates were able to slip through it without too much difficulty. At the end of the first quarter the Judge team had built up a 27-2- 6 lead. Angell started the Pirates on a scoring spree as he hit two jump shots from the top of the key. Beel got one field goal, then Perkins two, and Rupp one to put the Pirates back out in front, 39-3Brad Beel had a great night on the boards as he swept the defensive boards time and time again for ten rebounds to go along with the three rebounds defensive boards. Although Doug Perkins didn't lead the team in total points with his eight field goals, he was the best percentage shooter with a glowing 73 percent. Brad Beel dropped in 55 percent of liis shots and Kerry Rupp struck paydirt with 56 percent. Coach Smuins team shot 15 more shots from the field than did Tooele, 52 to 37. But Tooele started out well enough as they picked up a lead over a cold shooting Pirate crew. Then Angell got a foul shot and Beel popped in a corner shot and the gunners found the range. The Pirates finally caught the on a foul shot Buffaloes at by Kerry Rupp. Then Brad Beel shot to pumped in the and the Buccamake it neers were out in front for the rest of. the game. It was the Piat halftime. rates by the Buffaloes Defensively', stuck with a zone. They tried a full court press, but Coach Smuin had worked the Pirates hard on breaking a press after that Granger game and the team got through this one fairly easily. 6-- 0 14-1- 4 go-ahe- 16-1- 4 off the offensive board. Judge Memorial fought lo stay in the game during the third quarter, and down to five minutes left in the game, they Then were still behind, Phillips got a field goal and Barber got two to cut the Pirates' lead to ' After Cyprus missed two attempts at the foul line, Judge with two cut the lead to minutes left in the game. Rupp and Phillips traded foul Beel reshots to make it bounded a missed foul shot and plunked it in to make it 73. But Barber brought Judge right back to 72 and then fouled Doug Perkins, who made both shots. Those final four minutes were a mad scramble with each team trying desperately for the victory, but Rupp capped the game with two perfect foul shots to put the Pirates out in front for good with two seconds left in the 68-6- 37-3- 0 0. 68-6- 5. 70-6- 9 71-7- 0. Cyprus vs. Judge With 19 seconds left in the game, Kerry Rupp dropped in two free throws, to put Cyprus too much for a last ahead, second basket by Phillips to make much difference in the outcome of the game that ended 6 for the Pirates over a tough Judge Memorial High School Friday in Magna.
