ordained an elder april 7 1855 arrived in salt sail lake cily august 19 1868 ordained a high priest august 80 1890 officiated as an usher at the tabernacle from april until 1891 when he was honorably sister manning was born in hofford shire england april and emigrated to america with her parents robert and catherine watkins in 1842 they lived in nauvoo until 1852 when they crossed the plains with ox team and settled four miles south mouth of salt lake city they moved to 10 alpine utah auty county in I 1 1864 where the dece deceased amed met fleming manning and married him in 1855 the two moved to provo valley in 1869 and to provo caty in 1869 to richfield sevier county in 1871 and to salina in 1891 sister manning died as she had bad lived a faithful latter day saint COM SARAH SABAH B X E BARNEY charleston CHABI ESTON utah nov 10 1895 sarah sarab B barney departed this life saturday nov at 6 p ra at her home in charleston the deceased was born june jane 12 1811 in lebanon N H on nov 4 1829 she ahe married royal barney was baptized into the church mav 7 1831 and emigrated to utah in 1860 1850 she made her home in salt lake city until antil in the spring of 1890 when she moved to charleston utah where she has since resided with her daughter mrs N C murdock Mur dook sister barney has been failing for years but was only confined to her bed since july 20 she was the mother of six children only two of whom are living the body will come to salt lake city toy by rail via park city monday nov 11 and funeral services will be held in the eighth ward meeting house tuesday nov 12 ALVA N X EDWARD STEVENS edward stevens was born in the year vear 1823 on september in the town of hindon Hin doo wiltshire england he was the only sou eon of stephen stevens and mary phillips phillipa steven slovene both ot of hindon hibdon his father died when he was waa a few months old his bis mother was left with nothing but her hands bands to supply their wants nis his tamer fattier had been drawing a pension from fram the east india company C but ut on his death the pension eased his father was the only uon son of richard and sarah stevens his mother then went out to service and he was taken to live with his bis grandmother where he be stayed till he was ten years of age he was then taken away to live with one of his uncles his grandmother dying soon after he afterwards became acquainted with and married miss mis gale a i mister ister of our lellow fellow townsman charles gale by whom he had bad two children he was baptized in the church of cequs christ of latter day saints by eldir elder arthur about the year 1850 emigrated to america in 1856 1855 located in st louis for two years st at which place he lost his wife and one child emigrated to utah in the year 1857 with the hand cart company lits his remaining child walking nearly the whole way located in salt lake city where he became acquainted quain ual ted with ana and married his remaining ug wife maryaan mary ann stevens Sl ovens he wain the employ ot of president young as got gordoner doner for several years moved to payson ju in 1806 was called ons on a mission to england in april 1880 and was absent for two years yeara he leaves a wife and large family D WILLIAM tiam WHALLEY JACKSON the subject of this thin memoir brother william whalley jackson was born at north shield cumberland england sept his lather wao a leading minister ot of the methodist new organization and was one ol of the six ix founders of that church and author of a number of christian and other publications licati ons prominent among which was haq a lecture entitled mormonism niam weighed in U the balances and found wanting when a lad of seventeen he embraced the mormon faith much against the wishes of akis ais father who held that faith in derision and nd was its bitter opponent his mother died when he be was about ten years old and his hi father on account of his hie em bracing the gospel disinherited him from all title to his property at the age of seventeen he embraced the gospel and was b baptized by elder eider holmes at leicester leicestershire Leicester shire england in 1848 and at the rge age of nineteen married hannah Brooke of warm ire he was ordained a deacon priest and elder eider respectively while in england and was an earnest advocate of the gos goa el while employed in his bis daily business suring aring which time he became president of the War branch aforesaid which position he held until ne he emigrated to utah in 1852 with wilb his wite wife and one son cros crossing crosing ing the plains in captain tidwells company and settling in salt lake four years where he buried his bin wife and second son and afterwards married ellen wright there he was ordained a seven tv about 1853 and moved to american pork forte in october 1856 where he remained until his bis death november 3 8 1895 he was an active member of the seventies and was one of the seven presidents of its sixty savenh quorum in november 1876 he took a mission to the southern states which he filled with honor and was called on a mission to englard november 29 1879 re mining in the summer of 1881 and engaged in the mercantile business for himself he was for some time a member of the american fork operative cooperative co board and took charge of its business several years he owned a sawmill in west went mountain and in alpine and american fork canyons and tilled filled offices ot of trust in the city council he married a third wife wary wareham Waro bam in 1864 by whom he had bad two sons SODS he has left two wives five sons aud and a daughter to mourn his des dea h eleven of his children have gone before him he died as an he be had lived bearing a strong testimony to the truth of the ahe gospel and to the ministry of holy angels to him while in the flesh esh beloved byall by all he has pa sed to his glory on high with a sporle a reputation to await the reward of the righteous in a glorious resurrection 0 D EVANS SISTER EMMA 0 BULL mrs emms emma 0 bull was me daughter of jumes and eliza cheshire careen she was born on february lat 1828 in birmingham warwickshire Warwick shire england she heard board the gospel in its fullness as revealed through the prophet joseph smith in her native town in 1849 and wao wan baptized in june of that year by elder jeter clinton Clin tou she was the only member ot 01 her fa birs family who became connected with the church of if jesus christ of latter latier day saints of she was a and faithful member from the date of her initiation to the close of her earkly career early in 1853 1858 she bade farewell to hone home relatives aud and friends and departed for salt lake city there to dwell among the people ut of her choice the parting was painful alt bur bu her trust in god combined with her self re enabled her bar to endure the ordeal she baided bailed from liverpool on the ship jersey for new orleans at which point she duly arrived arg ived and then proceeded to LO keokuk iowa the immigration outfit ting ling point of the saints for that thai year she crossed the great plains in captain joseph W youngs train and endured without a murmur all the hardships and inconvenienced incidental to iu an overland trip ot of that thai character walking almost the entire distance to salt lake uty nearly 1300 1 buo the company arrived at ac its destination in the early part of october Oci ober 18 1853 mrs bull soon entered upon a career of usefulness in her new home being the pioneer professional dressmaker of utah in the spring following her arrival she became connected with the original dramatic association and made her debbi as a hermon in damon and pythias on the occasion of the first presenta presentation tiou of that play in the social hall her active membership in the dramatic organization extended over a series of years the subject of this sketch was married ried to joseph bull october apostle ezra ears T benson performing the ceremony in may of the year following her husband was called to take a mission to california her son joseph was born in the summer of 1856 1855 it is a notable fact of her experience that her husband during nearly an entire period of ten years of their early married life was absent from home on missions and attending to business lor for the DESERET NEWS she was consequently quent ly in this time left lefi single handed to 10 rear lear care for and support herself and three children which she one did with that aptitude tact and devotion for which she was justly noted she with heroic fortitude passed through the trials and hardships ot of the gra grasshopper shopper war ot of 1855 0 6 and with her husband joined in the move southward with wo tue saints when the buchanan army was approaching mrs bulls only son joseph survives her emma lizzie and emily her three daughters preceded her to LO the paradise of god in october of 1877 mrs bull accompanied her husband to england tor for the purpose of visiting relatives in that country she remained amongst them one year receiving at their hauda hardd the most kind and considerate treatment that could be desired daring this time lime she accumulated much valuable information connected with her family genealogy which she succeeded in tracing as an lar jar back as the year 1600 she was a model wife and mother and was possessed of excellent judgment and unusually goud good business busine a capacity while her thoroughness extended not only into her domestic lile life but was characteristic of all her undertakings she was secretary ary lor for afif fifteen geen 3 earn of the ladles relief society of the seventeenth ward and her record iti is probably the best beat kept of any other relief at association in the territory having been so pronounced so far as he had bad examined by andrew jenson ahe performed pert ormed labors in the logan and salt halt lake temples until she officiated for all her dead ancestors ot of whom she he had ob information she was one of the regular workers inthe in the temple 1084 named from the date ot of its opening mal may 23 28 1898 until friday october 19 1895 the day previous t 10 her being seized with the illness which ended her earthly career the complaint was waa pneumonia with abion she he was wall taken on saturday october 20 at 10 pm p m and she breathed her last hot going peacefully and smilingly to sloop sleep at ai 3 15 on the morning of the thursday following the deceased wais a woman of refined tastes and marked artistic ability some of her pictorial needlework has hais probably excelled anything of that character ever produced in this territory although the society of this good woman will be greatly missed by her immediate connections especially by her husband and a host of warm ti lends friends that thai must be the only cause of regret fr f r her departure from this mortal sphere an aa her well weil spent aud and consistent con life assured for her an eternal inheritance in the mansions of the blest |
