The Magna man retreated rapidly, so he was not hurt by the skunk, but he said that in conversation with other residents, he knew there were quite a few of the animals around with the stripe down their backs and bushy tails. Other residents attest to this fact by the odor that is wafted along breezes the strength of it depending on the skunks location. But, some families, including the Lee Cavanees at 3271 S. 7700 West, Lake Ridge, love skunks and have them as pets. They bought a skunk and three days later, the little animal had seven kittens. Three were raised to maturity and the others sold. Mrs. Cavanee says they kept "Sassy, now 3 Vi months old, the friskiest in the litter. Sassy is quite shy but goes all over the house. The animal tends to hide in the day and roam at night. Skunks are usually beneficial to man since they eat many insects and mice. In cooler parts of their range they are valuable as producers of fur. Occasionally, skunks kill poultry and destroy eggs. They are no good climbers and their depredations are limited to poultry roosting on or near the ground and to eggs in nests near the ground. A skunk may take a single bird at a time, but once the habit is formed, it repeatedly visits the poultry yard. However, in some instances, fanners will find that the real culprits are rats, weasels or even mink, all of which are adept climbers and kill far more ruth- (Continued From Page 1) Finance: E. M.
