Others are doomed to fold up because the people are not patronizing their home business places the way they should. Its an unhealthy situation all around and affects every body in the community, the biggest store owner to the smallest farmer several miles away. Take the stores out of the town and the town ceases to exist. With the stores will go the schools, banks, churches and other institutions that make rural life attractive. Take away the social, cultural and marketing centers and the life of the American farm family will become drab and uninteresting. There is an old Latin saying that Necessity is the Mother of Invention. For the last quarter of a century, or ever since the motor cars have become more popular and the roads better, people have been drawing away from their own towns to buy many of the things they needed in the larger places. Why some people do that isnt clear. A national brand of range, refrigerator or washing machine is the same brand, whether you buy it in Magna, Granger or Salt Lake City. There isnt any difference and the price is practically the same. But some people have the idea its smart to bring something in from a large city so that they can tell about it. This thing of buying away from home is a foolish practice and if it isnt stopped in time will prove harmful, not only to the town, but to the individual himself. The practice is like a cancerous growth it isnt very noticeable at first, but if it is permitted to go without intelligent treatment, it will eventually get out of control and destroy the person afflicted. The small towns have been fighting for their existence for a long time and they are bound to win out in the end because there is too much at stake. If the business in a small town falls off to any great extent, property values fall in proportion and when property values drop, tax income decreases. When that happens, the cultural centers of the town school, churches and other community institutions will suffer. Even the value of lands in the vicinity will go down. Land near a live town with good schools,. fhurches and markets, is always more valuable than a farm of Cqtial productivity and improvements near a dying town,: Leaders of the various communities haye long been aware of what was happening And, thiy have done everything within their power to keep their coromUnities in the front lilies. In the more progressive placw, the storekeepers have modernized their stores and introduced new ways of displaying it more attractively to give it greater appeal just as they do in the v. . city stores. And now consider this point, which after all, is the more important for the townspeople and farmers alike: The more you buy at home, the more activity you help to create, and the more activity, the more jobs there will be. And always remember this, youre only a customer designated by a number in a mail order house and they wont have anything to do with you if you havent the ready cash. You cant get credit at a mail order house, but you can at a local store. f ...Our On the night of May 24, some 32,000,000 Americans of driving age took part in a unique audience participation television program, the first National Drivers Test, produced by CBS News with the cooperation of the National Safety Council and sponsored by Shell Oil Company. Although this was the largest audience that- ever watched a sponsored public service program on one network, millions of drivers did not watch the program and test themselves on their driving ability and knowledge. These people will have a second opportunity to take the National Drivers Test Monday night, Aug. 30, on the CBS television network, again sponsored by Shell. Why is this significant? The National Safety Council points out that nearly half of a special panel of 1,800 persons, representn of U. S. driving a failed the National either ers, Drivers Test or rated poor. Howard Pyle, president of the National Safety Council, said this means that more Americans need to be made aware of their shortcomings as drivers and improve their driving skills and habits. He expressed the hope that the second telecast of the National Drivers Test before the Labor Day weekend would help to reduce the traffic toll over the holiday. - cross-sectio- Interesting Facts An analysis of the scores frdm the special panel reveals a number of interesting facts, the National Safety Council points out. The average score for the entire group was 51 out of a possi- ble 80 points. The Council characterized this as a barely passing score. Professional drivers did no better, their scores also averaging 51. Those in the panel who had had driver education had the highest average, 53. Are men or women better drivers? The panel results indicated men are. They averaged 52, while the women averaged 49. CBS and Shell have Teceived hundreds of complimentary letters, including many from Gover nors, U. S. Senators and state safety directors. Many writers asked that the show be televised again and others requested a film of it. This enthusiastic response was one of the main reasons CBS and TROUT UNLIMITED SLATES MEETING The regular monthly meeting of Trout Unlimited will be held Tuesday, Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m. in the Fish and Game building, 1596 West North Temple, Salt Lake City. An entertaining film, Wilderness and Canadian Trout will be shown. Anyone wishing further information may dial 484-410- 5. Right about now, when the trees are still green and the late summer sun still, potent, is the ideal time to think about fending menace off that known as influenza. Why the big head start? Because influenza vaccine the of flu approved fender-offtakes time after injection to become effective. And while flu is essentially a winter ailment, it can begin appearing in Septemmid-wint- er er ber. Timely use of flu vaccine might have prevented 60,000 of the 86,000 deaths that occurred during the epidemic from 1958 to 1961. Flu vaccine is effective in preventing the disease in about seven out of the ten people vaccinated. Those who particularly need it because they are among those most vulerable to flu are people with emphsema or other diseases of the breathing systems also those with heart trouble, diabetes, or some other chronic disease. Pregnant women, and all persons over 45 also are in the vulerable group and should be vaccinated. Influenza at best is a highly unpleasant sickness, bringing headache, sore throat, weakness, muscular pains, often chills and fever or nausea. Vaccinations last only a year; booster shots are then needed. 297-292- 297-248- 2. . TV SERVICE Phono BY Reasonable rates.
