The only exceptions were the Dwight Eisenhower victories in 1952 and 1956. In those instances, the nation embraced a a national hero who could just as well have been elected as a Democrat. Ike himself had trouble deciding which nomination he should seek. . . . Ift An E!:cti:n Ycrr Citizens know this is an election year from the kind of news that emanates from Washington. All recipients of Social Security are to have a five per cent in crease, before election, of course. Members of the House and Senate have approved pay raises for 1,700,000 civilian federal employes, which also includes themselves, Earlier they approved a military pay raise. Altogether it will cost about $763 million annually. The new bill will raise the wages of most federal workers about $340 yearly. ... non-politici- an Ajftftr--- r Gc:3 c.i IVbj An old legerd relates that long ago God had a great many burdens which He wished to have transported from one place to another upon the earth, so He requested the animals to lend a hand. Whereupon all of them began to make excuses for not helping: the elephant was too dignified; the lion, too proud; the giraffe, too tall, etc. Finally the birds came to Cod and said: "If You will tie the burdens in small bundles, we shall be glad to take them for You. We are small, but we should like to help." So God fastened upon the back of each one a small bundle. They all set out across the vast plain toward their destination. Singing as they went, they did not seem to feel the weight of the burdens at all. Every day the burdens seemed lighter and lighter, until the loads seemed to be lifting the birds instead of the birds carrying the burdens. When at last the birds arrived at their destination, they discovered to their amazement that when they removed their loads, in their place were wings wings to ens. They able them to live in the beautiful sky and the had learned how to carry their burdens, and their loads had become wings to lift them nearer to God. The burdens that we carry, if they are borne for others, may become wings of the spirit to lift us into happiness such as we have never known. ;klnn A Mixed kneSirrj The Maryland Court of Appeals has upheld the right of a farmer to drive his cows down main street even if they do disrupt traffic. This is an "ancient right," the court held, which the automobile has not abrogated. In New Jersey, the neighbors objected on aesthetic grounds to a backyard collection of 62 vintage Packards and the owner is painfully hauling them off to an outlying section. In New York, Mayor Wagner has issued orders that, traffic congestion or no traffic congestion, streets are not to be widened without the approval of local citizens as expressed by planning boards. The Americans love affair with the automobile often seems touched with ambivalence, another indication being his enthusiastic support for new highways provided they are built through the next town. Celebrated as the centurys greatest mechanical gift to man, the automobile continues to proliferate as rapidly as people. This is the third successive year U.S. automobile production is booming and seems headed for a record of more than 7.6 million units. Moreover, 1965 models will have more than usual changes in a drive to keep the boom going. Having long replaced the horse, the automobile now seems destined to replace feet and, despite its effects on cities and waistlines, few would have it otherwise. It does make a difference who wins this year. There is a distinct contrast in philosophies. It is apparent to even the most disinterested person. Perhaps the time has arrived when it is no longer possible for a thinking person to be independent This looks like a milestone year, one the historians will point to when they look back on this Republic in its 188th year. It is an oversimplification to speak of turning right or keeping left but that is the decision this nation will make in November. If Senator Goldwater is defeated, it will be a long time before the Republican party ever yields its nomination to a conservative again. For there is no substitute for victory. On the other hand, should Goldwater win or even run a close race, American politics will undergo a drastic change. It may become the rule, rather than the exception, for the Republican standard bearer to be a conservative. Contrast between candidates may become normaL Politicians love to talk about issues." In the recent past most such talk has been idle chatter, at least in Presidential elections. Not so in 1964. This year here is a real issue, not a phony one. There is a genuine contrast between the candidates. Barry Goldwater has been talking for months about "a choice, not an echo. His words are apt Voters have an unusual opportunity this year. It should be interesting and important to the nations future. Contrast will not be lacking this November. An avowed conservative will oppose a dedicated liberaL Indeed, the clearer image will be that of Senator Barry Goldwater. You do not need to know a great deal about politics to know where he stands. President Lyndon B. Johnson, on the other hand, will be like the tightrope walker, now leaning this way, then the other way. He will be too liberal for some others. If his performance as President the past eight months is any indication, Johnson will continue to try to be all things to all men, at once the champion of both r, Henry Ford ni and Walter natural enemies though they may be. If Johnson gets away with it, it will be no contest. If he can woo and win Northern liberals and Southern and Western conservatives at the same ' time, Goldwater will take the bad In all thy actions, think God licking some pollsters see.
