The ol swimming hole has been replaced by a modern pool where experienced lifeguards watch the hundreds of children at the Jackling recreational site and adults who use the cooling filtered water as a refresher on torrid days. Many automobiles have air conditioning and citizens have learned to wear light, comfortable and much less clothing as a means of battling the heat . A and large capacity refrigerator graces nearly every home and apartment where cooling drinks, ice cream and choice summer foods, including several kinds of berries and fresh fruit are available. Yes, the good old days may have had their merits, but most of us will be content to battle heat with modern gadgets in scientifically cooled homes and autoa. near-100-degr- eg well-stock- ed 100-degr- ee man-ma- de ... A ta Grcrlrr America Little more than two Centuries have passed ' since the first Americans began transforming a wildnerness into fertile fields to found a new nation. His friends enjoyed them so much they urged him to make them commercially, but he dismissed the idea with a laugh until he started the new Magna Pizza Box his first venture into business for himself the Pizza Box at 2700 South and 8800 W., dial Mr. Kempter retired two years ago and found that idle time on his hands was undesirable and that he had to do something to keep busy. Thus the opening of the Pizza Box, which serves customers every day from 5 p.m. to midnight and on weekends, remains open until 1 p.m. Finest Equipment The new establishment has the very latest gas oven, automatically controlled at 700 degrees, with ample space to cook eight large pizza pies simultaneously. There are automatic controls for perfect baking on each pie. He, has a huge refrigerator to store his ingredients which are of the highest quality using Moarelle cheese by Banquet Butter Co., best quality Bar-- S meats, fresh Italian sausage he makes daily himself and mushrooms that are cooked in butter. Mr. Kempter opened three weeks ago, in the middle of the KCC strike, and was very dubious of business prospects at the time, but business is good. He finds that many of his sales are after 10 p.m. from swing shift workers, 297-661- 2. 200-milli- on . k older folks in foster homes? Do the foster parents get paid? How does this work? I think its a terrific thing for lonely old people. Whats the story? RUTHIE Dear Rulhto; It is a thrilling story known as Foster Home Care for tho Aged. It is usually operated by a state Department of Public Welfare. Great care is taken to place each old person in the home that best suits them. Foster families make application. They are paid from tho monthly welfare check received by the "guest" This allows older folk to way. You're right: this is tho most terrific thing since the creation of tho equally exciting Homomaking Service! UP section. en Poverty The United States Senate voted Thursday to provide 947 million dollars to aid the war on poverty which President Lyndon B. Johnson sought Fifteen million of the amount he requested was not voted. Voting 947 million dollars to battle poverty in the United States is an infinitesmal sum compared with the billions Uncle Sam has voted to help the less fortunate in all parts of the world through lend lease and foreign aid. Uncle Sam already has 42 federal programs in operation funds which come from the national treasury, many of which are used to aid in the campaign to oppose poverty. The new bill as passed by the Senate, which now must go to the House, has a provision which will make it possible to grant up to $1,500 each to small farmers, on whom farm subsidies and other forms of aid have been spent to aid their sagging economy. Battling poverty Is not an emergency measure, but a continuing one, for there will always be citizens who, because of economic conditions, or by their own choice, remain in want and do not care to help themselves to a better life. Some leaders in American life claim we are fast becoming like some other nations, one in which we have richer people and more who are considered have nots. The same senators who voted for the poverty bill and members of Congress who will support it, might take a hard look at our foreign aid program and consider spending most of that money to aid poverty areas in the United States. Economic assets of our nation have been drying up at a rapid rate due to the millions of Americans who are assessed high income taxes. Many small and large business enterprises have ceased due to the drain which income taxes demand from their efforts, plus the irony of trying to meet foreign competition where labor is lower. Our farm economy has been sagging at a serious rate as American farmers face the low cost of competition of imported meats and products produced where wages are lower. Many small business enterprises have been forced to close because of the necessity of keeping records and collecting taxes for the national treasury without compensation because the taxes create a steady drain upon their income. Slum areas in great cities, areas in the United States where industries have closed and many others of our growing social problems would be decreased if the money that was spent in other nations to help their economies were spent here in the United States for slum elimination, building schools and hospitals and colleges and educating our people for the economic changes that are developing as we 'adopt automation and see our population figures nearing the mark. . . .11:1 FAMILY TREE. PLEASE Dear Helen: Where can I get information about my ancestors when they came across the ocean and settled in America? It was in the first half of the 18th century. Backyard Host Turns Hobby Into Ho vi "Pizza" Businoss equipment, sandwiches; which are particularly popular in California. Family Help Mr. Kempter is helped by a daughter, Mary (Mrs. Steve Ellis). He lives with his family at 1888 W. 3300 South in Granger, but plans to move to Magna shortly. His wife, Ethel, also assists at times in the business. A son, Donald, lives in Magna, and another son, 13 years of age, is at home. Another daughter, Joyce, lives in Van Nuys, Calif. Mr. Kempter was previously an application engineer for Aircraft in California, and was formerly a senior buyer for Marquardt in Ogden. So, pizza making that has developed into an interesting business, is one example of a hobby that has been converted into profitable work.
