TO BE DEDICATED Americas first war was the War of Independence. But independence was not sought for its own sake the true object was freedom. Independence is not necessarily and always desirable. Freedom is. Russia has independence, but the people have no freedom. Cuba has independence, but the people appear to have lost most of their freedom and to be losing it completely. if History is being made before our eyes. But I wonder how apon realize what are goes of us who witnessing many palling it is. Perhaps those who read of it in a hundred years from nov will understand its significance better. The Nazi and Facist tyrannies were beaten down. But the Communist tyranny has engulfed a large part of the world. The areas of freeciom are shrinking alarmingly. withMany of the Communist ideas are winning ground out the striking of a military blow. we This is exactly what was intended by Lenin-th- at should spend and spend until we bled ourselves white. And it is what is intended by his followers today. It is exactly what we are doing. The Communists would rather take us over by attrition and by subversion than by military action. It may take longer, but there is less jeopardy to their ideology. The welfare state is Socialism. It is not necessarily the socialization of the means of production, but it is socialization of income. National Socialism in Germany under Hitler was not socialization of productive facilities, but of income. Socialism i3 Communism. The initials U.S.S.R. mean the Union of Soviet Socialists Republics. We are drifting rapidly in that direction and are nearer the brmk than people realize. The drift is in the same direction no matter what party is in power. The state taxes youf income. You pay taxes on your property and you pay a multiplicity of other taxes, many of them hidden. The drain upon us becomes more and more oppressive. h Some people in the lowest income tax bracket give up of their net taxahle income to the Federal government. one-fift- Little by little your liberty is being narrowed. Farming, for example, is more and more regulated. Government subsidizes a great many things these days and proposes to subsidize more and more. Currently, the most talk is about education and medical care. At the start the subsidies will be relatively moderate and the regulation hardly noticeable. But both will grow and grow. If we Americans allow this to continue we shall find ourselves subsidized by our own substance. We will be regimented as individuals and as local communities. Our affairs, including our schools, will be run from Washington by bureaucrats and education will be poisoned with propoganda. Are we preserving freedom? Is the time coming when it must be said that our men and women who lost their lives in freedoms cause died in vain? Herbert V.
