Show - r 16A Friday May :' 'r®' -' 'rpj'T '- National 14 1999 — Standard-Examine- ‘T-1 r Victims impress volunteers Spirit of Oklahoma’s residents remains positive despite devastation By CHARLES F TBENTELMAN Standard Examiner staff Texas -- Two Ogden who went to help tornado victims said Thursday that they’ve been overwhelmed both by the size of the disaster and by the spirit of the people they are helping “It’s been a positive experience” said Tex Beauchamp “The people have been extremely grateful They keep asking us how we’re doing They’re an incredible people” Tex and Janet Beauchamp are disaster relief volunteers for the Northern Utah Chapter of the American Red Cross They left Ogden on May 5 with the chapter’s emergency response vehicle to take part in relief efforts after a senes of tornados destroyed thousands of homes and businesses m Oklahoma Tex Beauchamp telephoning from the site Thursday said he and his wife were assigned to Moore a city just south of Oklahoma City It is one of the hardest hit he said with areas up to 10 city blocks totally flattened “The highest standing structure might be the contents of a closet It literally looks like an area that has been saturation bombed” he said “I’d seen the pictures on TV and it looks different on ground MOORE Okla tornado death toll reaches 44 The Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY - The death toll from last week’s tornadoes in Oklahoma rose to 44 when authorities found the body of a woman who was the last missing victim of the storm Tram Thu Bui 26 disappeared May 3 when a tornado sucked her from the arms of a man trying to hold on to her off an interstate in Moore Two women who were friends of Bui found her body Wednesday while searching along Interstate 35 near an overpass where Bui was last seen as she and her husband got out of their car with their two children Bui’s husband Thuanh protected the children while a man tried to hold onto Bui but she was pulled away by the tornado Her body was found beneath a pile of debris and she was identified Thursday The family was making a surprise visit from their home in Marlow to relatives in the Oklahoma City area when the tornadoes hit level” he said “It makes you want to cry” Oklahomans however aren’t crying he said They’re anxious for rebuilding to get started A fleet of Red Cross trucks was called to the area Tex and Janet are feeding the residents of the devastated areas two meals a day as they clean up after the disaster He said “cleaning up” is not a fair description of what the people are doing “Most of the time it’s been a case of sorting through the piles of debris looking for mementos and what’s left” he said “It’s a very scary thing” He’s most impressed by the spirit of the residents who’ve had their homes destroyed “with their faith and their resilience” The Red Cross set up shelters he said but they haven’t been used much “The generosity of the people has been so great People are staying with friends and relatives Hotels and motels have given away their rooms for free So we’re seeing small numbers at the shelters” The couple probably will be returning to Utah in a week Their phase of the rescue effort is winding down “The areas have been devastated so badly they are allowing the people time to sift for belongings and then they’re arranging for bulldozers” he said Few of the people are talking about leaving the area for somewhere less storm-pron- e “Most of them are talking about staying They keep on ” saying ‘This is our home’ he said You can real h reporter Charles 2 Trentelman at or him at ctrentelmania standard net '- 4 I n "aw ' ' I wild does It get on - Friday arid Saturday lights?
