There are plenty of intriguing individual matchups in the opening-roun- d playoff series between the Utah Jazz and the Sacramento Kings In a series that saw all three games go into overtime this year (with the Jazz winning twice) there are two marquee matchups: At power forward where Utah’s Karl Malone and Sacramento’s Chris Webber will tangle and the point guard battle between Jazz veteran John Stockton and Kings rpokie Jason Williams At power forward Malone is considered perhaps the best to ever play that position while Webber is establishing himself as a possible heir apparent Webber who averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds a game this year missed eight games in- - eluding the March game against the Jazz due to the flu and the regular-seaso- n finale against Vancouver due to back spasms He is expected to be healthy for the playoffs “Chris Webber hasn't played but he’ll be back and he’ll be ready to play” Malone said “All those guys are playing really well so we’re going to have our hands full” Especially Stockton The leader veteran and in both assists and steals will be challenged by Williams the rookie Kings’ lightning-quic- k who took the NBA by storm this season with his flashy passing and the deepest shooting range in ar all-ti- the league In his usual quiet low-ke- y manner Stockton downplayed the individual matchup “I worry about the Kings” Stockton said “Certainly we have to do a good job on (Williams) He’s a key element to their team But I never got caught up in the despair Ay Title time Vlade Divac at center court after the mentor helped rookie teammate Predrag Stoakovic on his driving exam and taught him about life in the NBA Now they are bonded by black armbands Their evenings are devoted to basketball their nights to the horror of watching their homeland bombed Divac and Stoiakovic who have helped lead the Sacramento Kings into the playoffs for only the second time in 1 3 seasons are Serbs Basketball is a sanctuary Sleepless nights are a reality "We have a double life” says Divac the dark circles under his eyes a testament to two hours of sleep a night "I come here it's fun Then it's back to reality can't sleep lie in bed buzzer-beatin- one-on-o- ne matchups” Stockton’s teammates howev- er weren't shy about speaking up “I've played with Stock for 14 years and I'll put him up against anybody” Malone said “It’s not going to be about we’re going to have defensive assignments where we’ll have to help our point guards and they’ll have to help us” Another interesting matchup takes place at center where Utah’s Greg Ostertag and Sacramento’s Vlade Divac got personal in their battle the last time they met on the court killing innocent people" start Off to a good Brums Stars win conference 7B semifinal openers NFL tragedy Mark Tumei found dead at age 39 8B 7B BASEBALL American League Tampa Bay 5 Kansas City 4 New York 4 Minnesota 3 (10) Baltimore 4 Chicago 2 Boston 3 Texas 2 Oakland 3 Toronto 2 Cleveland 8 Seattle 4 Detroit 4 Anaheim 2 National League Pittsburgh 13 St Louis 3 -
