Show THE SUGAR INDUSTRY farmington FAB utah jan ae 1894 it seams that the only alternative for further manufacture of beet bullar to in stati to is a reduction in the price of sugar beets of one dollar per too ton thle this may seem impracticable to some but to the majority I 1 think it will nut not or it should not I 1 see ee by a late correspondent that in california the farmers have raised and delivered beets to she abe factory at a cost of per too ton I 1 believe it would be impossible to raise beets here bete for wat that price while I 1 nave have bad no experience in beet raising from which to speak yet I 1 nave have bad considerable in raising grain and all the cereals also aleo produce of all wads kind it the be beet raisers raiders of lehi and ana our eur rounding country would estimate the coo cost ot of raising grain at prices also other prod uce for or w b bibb ich practically practical jj speaking there is in no price and add it is frequently the case u 0 sale at uny any pricy pric I 1 there would be but lew few indeed who would taro heir attention from beet raising to raising the different ce cereals roJo lawa season I 1 raised 1000 bushels of number one wheat on account of obligations that I 1 had to meet I 1 was obliged to sell at 40 and 45 coats cents per bushel after deducting the seed of harvesting machinery that I 1 was obliged to buy oo Arding harvesters ind and threshers thre shefit and the grain abe harvesters carried away for tull toll I 1 had enough left to pay a reasonable lease on the he land providing I 1 did not own the tend fl but in consideration ot of having no lease to pay 1 I had h a snug little sum sam to turn over to the coubry tolle ator for the satisfaction of ax owning vay ny own land it will be borne in alog mind also that I 1 have allowed myself noth magfor aag for plowing narrowing harrowing drilling harvesting and marketing all of the grato graid I 1 with wish to say may in this connection hat aliat I 1 find my experience to be the experience at 0 many others this condition cannot be laid to unsuccessful farming arming but bat to the supply oi of all the he different lerent dif kinds oi of grain whlor exceeds the domand demand and has baft done clone so tor for a long jong succession ot 01 bearr yen re it to is cause ou that the farmers ol of toe 1600 valley bave been adopt log looking to the tee cutting ot of large tracts of land into small email farms and diminishing the kinds of products that are in excess of he demand and raising the kinds kids that are not a burden on the market now while 1 nave have no authority or experience in fin the cost coat of beet production yet it looks reasonable that if an acre or of land could be made to produce 20 tons tone of beets and they could be delivered to 10 the factory at a cost of 2511 would won pay much bettor better than soy other product which I 1 know anything about providing the beets were 4 per ton I 1 it seems to me that every taxpayer in utah should favor a bounty on all ail the sugar produced at home this would not only stimulate the manufacture ot of sugar at home but would be the means of placing within the reach of all the people a wholesome article which to say may the least is ie worth 80 per cent more to the consumer than the sugar we have shipped to in from east and west I 1 believe this bia assertion is buhy warranted because the home article to is very much sweeter so much so that it requires no skill tu to detect the difference between the theaone bonas made article and the imported it is very evident that times in utah would have been very much harder during the past two years bad it not been for the vast sums hums of money usual ly sent broad abroad for sugar that were kept at howe home while I 1 have in no instance received a dollar directly for labor or beets from the sugar factory yet I 1 have no doubt but that I 1 have been materially bene berie fitted and that financially if in no a other manner it is in in the way of a superior article of sugar which bai cost the people less than it would have done had bad it not been for our home manufacture i for a people to tobe ke sel founts loing it requires the united effort of all realizing that chrt when we are home labor we are directly sustaining ourselves we are told old that by our system oa 01 institutions the laws are enacted and executed with the consent of the people then why not the people demand of the next legislative i assembly the passage of an ov abet et placing a bounty on all the sugar made at hoat I 1 milk the matter should be by our eur lead leading j jag men and also by the fabe press I 1 am sure there sire are a areat adrest many who would buy the home article at a stipulated price no matter what the price of imported sugar may be but if a bounty was given this his would insure a profit which would keep out our present factory running at full blast and perhaps be the means of starting star tiou mori more it is truly to he be hoped that this very important wetter matter will receive all due attention and that th desired end ena will be instead of the present factory closing that more will be established until utah will be able to keep over one halt half million dollars in circulation which at as present are being sent seat away for sugar J ja S WHITE JR JK |
