Show OBITUARY HANNAH STEVENS MARKS MARES hannah stevens marks whose death occurred in salt halt lake city february was born in landwair Land vair monmouth ghize england on we the day of february 1812 she was baptized in the church of jesus christ ot or latier later day saints in i he year 1851 at newport mon was well known aud and beloved by hundreds of the elders who labored in chati vicinity from 1851 to the time of her departure for utah in the year 1866 with her noble companion the late laie john whose death occurred dome five years and four months previous us to mother marks for their universal kindness to 10 them brother and sister marks marka having provided a home for the elders during that period hi hiter bisier ter marks was a woman of noble and generous impulse ever ready to moist assisi in sickness or d hit cressand res sand h hundreds have cause to honor her memory in crossing the plains she ca came me very near losing her life through over anxiety and latigue fatigue in caring lor for her family and nursing the in camp but she one bore all her suffering herauf fering without a complaining complain trig word arriving in the valley on october ath 1866 and with joy and rejoicing was reunited witti with her husband who had preceded her one year and prepared a home to receive his family in the fourteenth ward of this city where they chev lived the greater part of the time of thir residence in bah inthe in the year 1875 brother and sis er marks vial ted led weir native land spending eleven mouths months very pleasantly with their three sons and numerous illness which was contracted while waiting on the the sick nick and which lasted about two years during the U lat st three months of which she was waa confined to her bed but she bore abe affliction bringing up her family since the of june 1871 at which time her husband walter hoggan was killed in red bed butte canyon near salt lake city by a rook rock which he be was quarrying falling upon him she was a mot moat kind loving and industrious mother a true friend and a faithful latter day saint to the time of other her death which occurred on february 2nd and 1895 at her home inthe in the eleventh ward salt lake city the funeral was largely attended in the ward meeting house on february ath and the various speakers all testified to her sterling worth and fidelity to the cause of truth she leaves four sons and four daughters and thirty nine grandchildren and many friends who sadly miss her one son preceded her to the life beyond a number of years ago she died with a firm faith in the gobbel and glorious hopes of coming forth in the morning ot the first resurrection SABAH JOHNSTON TUTTLE died at her home in manti on feb 1895 sarah Johnston Joh naton tuttle sister tuttle was born in the western mart part 0 ot I 1 the state of new york on april sand d 1820 her parents dying in her infancy she was raised by an elder sister she joined the church in her early youth and in company with her and family gathered with the saints at kirtland and was piss present at the dedication of the kirtland temple later she took up her line ot of march to join the saints in missouri but upon arriving at carthage illinois word was received that they had been driven from their homes in that state consequently sister bisier tuttle and her relatives took up their abode in carthage and were there at the time of the martyrdom about this time she became acquainted with and married a young man named george 0 W johnston soon after afier he was called to perform a mission in the state of michigan and she accompanied her husband and rendered him valuable assistance si anoe in his missionary labors being even in her early youth a faithful and devout latter day sint saint upon brother johnstons return from his field of labor he and his wife lived in nauvoo until after the saints were driven out of that city brother johnston Job started with the Pio pioneers neeru but was sent book back before the journey was accomplished but returned in 1851 with his family sister johnston Job was not blessed with oh children ildren but the children of her husband in the order of marriage were tend tenderly erty loved and oared cared for by her while on the plains brother johnston together with his bis mother and sister fell victims to the cholera which did such tearful execution in the year 1851 sister johnston being left dependent on her own resources was soon after afier married to william mills with whom she came to utah and settled in salt lake for a short time lime they were then called to go to the frontier settle ment of manti in sanpete county and during the indian troubles in 1853 bro mills was killed being left a widow for the second time she was waa in marriage b by Y brother john tuttle who ha had some time before been bereft of his wife ife and was sadly in need of a mother for his little children she accepted the charge and her fidelity to the trust was abundantly attested by the sorrowing children and grandchildren who followed her remains to her last lait costing place slater sister tuttle tattle was truly a wonderful woman she was in every respect a faithful and consistent latter day saint she was a women woman of rare financial ability and was generous to af a fault aultin in responding to every call for the ing of zion she contributed more than any other individual to the building of thi the manti mand temple the means being the fruits of her own industry she was called to officiate as aa a worker in the manti temple soon alter after its dedication and has labored in that capacity ever since the redemption of the dead has always been a subject of vital interest to her aud she has been instrumental in redeeming a large number ot of her kindred her loyalty and devotion to every principle of the gospel was unquestioned as well as her fidelity to the priesthood in the days of persecution under the edmunds law lav her doors were always open to the oppressed she was also president of the teachers of the manti north ward relief society lor for many years and was an able and efficient officer as well as a faithful member she remembered with pride and pleasure her personal acquaintance with the and looked forward with joy to 10 the time when she abe would meet him in the world to come of her it can be truthfully said that thai she has fought the good tight light and has kept the faith and has gone to receive her reword reward to come forth in the morn morning ing of the first resurrection crowned with immortality and formerly bishop of granite halt bilt lake county utah bro des despain ain was born in Lotte alabama Ve december cember 3 1823 he moved to illinois and joined the church in 1851 in the year 1853 he went to arkansas and tennessee and filled an eight years mission in those states moved to utah in 1861 in the first independent train under captain david cannon and settled in little cottonwood canyon and when the granite ward was organized he was chosen as bishop which position he honorably filled until 1886 when he was released he then moved to arizona where he resided until his death elder despain was the father of awen ty seven children four of whom are dead eighty four grandchildren seven ty six living and twelve great grand children chil dien four of whom are dead he was noted for his integrity to his faith and died in the full hope ot a glorious hereafter communicated RICHARD birda NOVILLE B utah march 7 1895 richard bird son of benjamin and meribah reeves reeve bird who has just died here was born ocoler 13 1820 in chemung county N Y he was baptized into the church of jesus christ of latter day saints september 21 1845 at la harpe hancock county 1111 was or bained a seventy december 21 1845 and a high priest december 25 1884 he was married to emeline crandall march 27 1845 at la harpe he moved with his father to adam ondi ahman missouri in september 1838 and in the following No november ember laid down his arms end nd signed away his big right and title to all his property to defray the expenses of a merciless war in 1839 he was expelled from the state of missouri settling in nauvoo ill and was driven in 1846 crossing the plains in 1850 and arriving in salt lake city september 5 of the same year he settled in spring springville ville october 1 1850 and was one of the first six families who located here he helped build the first fort in springville Spring ville as a protection from indian invasions and endured the terrible effects of the walker war of 1853 took an active part in two indian wara and was constable tor for twelve or fifteen years in springville Spring ville he was also A member of the first city council of the city during daring several terms he took mission to fillmore and built a 64 house a a there in 1853 returning in 1854 to tpring ville and was the first branch clerk cleric there while he followed the of farmer in the fall of 1868 tie he wan waa called on a mission to the muddy and an located in long valley putting in crona there the following spring the settle ment wa was abandoned and he located in clover valley in the spring of 1809 19 was called to preside over the settlement and was its acting bishop two years or until it lell fell over the nevada line when he was honorably released and return r to springville spring ville in 1871 when in october of that year at aft the general conference of the church he was called on a mia sion to the united states to preach the gospel during which time he
