ot labor I 1 thought I 1 would add my mite 1 I left the diate bbate of mississippi my former field of labor april eth 1894 arrived at Madi madisonville sonville hopkins co ky the jtb and was feigned to labor with elder bider C W hoelz in hancock county ky since leaving the north alabama conference I 1 have traveled miles on the cars care 1986 1985 miles on OD lot fot f ot hold held 68 58 meetings visited 1401 families distributed 1201 tracts bap fixed and helped to balt baptize ize 24 genens pers eos blessed blamed and helped to bless 10 children and ordained one priest written six atti articles cles treating on the gospel gompel and had bad them published in the local papers on the 2nd and of august 1 I 1 baptized in the he beautiful ohio river an old gentleman aged seventy five years and his wife sixty biety six the old gentleman had never ba belonged longed t any church said asid he be had been a mormon all his bis life and know it he enjoys a goodly portion of the spirit of the lord and it makes him very verj happy and he be says guys he would not return retarn again into darkness for all the world contains of perishable matter I 1 have witnessed some marvelous mar veloue healings and answers to prayers while in the missionary field my health as ae a general thing khlok has been pretty good and I 1 have enjoyed my labors I 1 have labored with nine companion pa e I 1 perhaps a few items of my experience would be beneficial to some ot of my fellow laborers that are in the field or who expect to go there aber ia the near future A missionary experience is invaluable to a man it tends to broaden bis ble teaches him humility and reliance upon the Lord anu last but not least a love for his bis fellow man I 1 had been raised under the droppings of the sanctuary and tho thought kgb ai I 1 understood mormonism pretty well but I 1 bad not been iu in we the missionary field a month before I 1 discovered that I 1 know knew but very little there are four principles that lorm the basis of a mission arys success namely obedience to counsel humility strict observance of prayer and system it la is astonishing how few there are endowed with the last named principle I 1 know elders that have been in the field for nearly two years and they cannot take a subject and treat apon it intelligently and make it plain and comprehensive to their bearers their other endowments are all that could be reasonably asked for but they ramble all over the scriptures and anen they got get through the audience know as a little about the gospel as they did before the speakers speak drs ire commenced for the tb few ideas they slid did have are when such elders take a new companion he drops ioto the same error and it destroys part of his usefulness some elders are too retiring and bashful others other too aggressive the lat apt fault to is far the worst for a person naturally cultivates boldness bold but it la is a barn bard matter to restrain the desire to display what we know and sometimes what we dont know and aad en deavor to oram cram the gospel goepel down the people when they are so BO full of prejudice and sectarianism that one olle could nAt got get a mustard seed down them I 1 often think of the words of the savior cavior to ilia his apostles be ye therefore wise as an serpents pento and harmless as doves ls mat 10 1016 16 1 I have found in my experience the more diplomatic a person can be the better success one will have stroke the oat cat towards the switch end and we are not so apt to ruffle the lur fur it if we can cant it make a con vert make a friend the southern states mission under the efficient labors of the kimball brothers 11 Is in last reaching a high standard of perfection the house to house canvass is in a great improvement on the old haphazard wyle it 19 brings atie elders in touch with all the people and we are huot so apt to shun the cities and add big houses when the time arrives that they will have conference twice a year this mission will have reached a high state of perfection there are now elders coming into the field every now and theo then and the instructions given at the conferences has baa greater weight with the elders than to get it second handed from their companioni companio nc I 1 have found the southern people t be exceptionally kind and aad ad there are hundreds of them that would embrace the gospel il if it were not for tasir ministers but a areat many of mem are Igia ignorant orant at ab regards to book education and they depend upon their ministers to instruct them in the scriptures and they use every means possible to keep them ignorant for selfish purposes and or circulate all manner of 0 falsehoods and libelous literature among them to brej prejudice u them against us up but to judge by appearances and the signs f the times the will beci me too poor to pay abe minister and then the will III cease and the people will hunt the true rue gospel god speed the day we have closed out hancock county and my cay address will be Hop hopkinsville Hopki oBville kinsville christian Ib ristian county ky the DESERET NEWS comes to the ho elders as a comforting fiield
