1 can the precise cise purposes of this convention we are here under a call of true and loyal republicans republIc au desiring through that party to accomplish what we believe to be of good for the american people for myself I 1 never had the slightest thought of attempting to organize a new political ioli party I 1 think that such a thought toes does not enter the mind of any other delegate here present the party that freed the slave that dignified human labor that enacted ense i the se homestead laws I 1 that suppressed r essed the great rebellion that defended te its count rys Is honor in peace and advanced aitto it to he e front rank of the nations of the earth Is s good enough for or me the speaker said the record of the party for twenty years showed its willingness lin gness guess to grapple with this new issue and carry it to victory the issue was as great as ad any the republic had to meet in the past it resolved itself into the question whether the saloon waste dominate the politics of the nation we dont meet to dictate to the republican party said the speaker 11 we are here simply for consultation and we meet to encourage it to take hold of this question which it surely aurely will have to do and the sooner the better the speaker said he vi would look at the question solely from a political standpoint and not from a moral standpoint the saloon was in politics with its assessments and money and it today conr controlled oiled the politics of evera every large city it ir elects your mayors sida said the speaker land and in minnesota the democratic party had bad nominated for governor the very incarnation of saloon interests 91 he then spoke foi for thirty minutes on general issues he touched on THE prohibitionists and said it view that they could carry out their purposes in a be better ater way in following the leading of the republican party they would find that that party said that slavery should extend no further and on that platform slavery was waa absolutely abolished it if the republican party would declare for nigh lle license ense local option and recognize the right of the people to vote on the question directly when they wished to do so all lovers of temperance should follow that lead at the conclusion of Win doms address the convention adjourned till 2 when the convention reassembled assembled re in the afternoon the committee on resolutions was not prepared to report and did not appear before the convention until 6 in the meantime short speeches were made by a number of delegates on the general temperance issue in the several states of the union the report of the committee was as allows THE ANTI SALOON republicans by their representatives in national conference assembled declare as follows first that the liquor traffic as it exists today to day in the united states is an enemy of society a fruitful source of corruption in politics the ally of an archy the school of crime and with its avowed purpose of seeking to corruptly control the elections and legislation is a menace to the public wel fare and deserves the condemnation of all good men second that we declare war against the saloon and hold it to be tau supreme duty of the government to adopt such measures that shall restrict it wid aud control its influence and at the earliest possible moment to extinguish it altogether third we believe the national government should absolutely prohibit the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors in the district of columbia and all the territories of the united states fourth we believe the best beat practical method of dealing with the liquor traffic in the several states is to let the people eo ille decide whether it shall be prohibited I 1 bated by a rubw ou of ional dional amendments and until such mend ments are adopted by the pas sage ace of local option laws fifth that inasmuch as the saloon business creates A SPECIAL BURDUN of f taxation upon the people to support courts jails and alms houses bouses therefore an annual tax should be levied ou on saloons so long as they ahey continue to exist and that they thay should be made re for all and private injury resulting from the traffic sixth that the republican party wherever and whenever in power will faithfully enforce whatsoever ordinances statutes or constitutional amendments may be enacted for the restriction or suppression odthe liquor traffic seventh that we approve the action of congress and those states that have done so in providing fr for the teaching of the physical effects of in toxicants toxic ants in the schools and i we earnestly recommend to every ia state tate legislature the enactment of such laws as snail shall provide tor for a thorough teaching of such effects to our children eighth we demand that the rep republican ab party to we belong and whose bellare welfare we cherish shall take a firm and decided stand as THE FRIEND of THE HOME and ana the enemy odthe saloon in favor of this policy and these measures we pledge ourselves ou selves to do our utmost to cause the party to take such stun stand i and we call upon all temperance men and all friends of humanity of whatsoever evet party
