politics are now absorbing the attention of the people in this region to the exclusion of lesser subjects so that I 1 suppose we will have p a respite from the assaults of the mormon eaters I 1 might mention that the of afew would be mentors la in this vicinity sonie bome time past has brought about an enquiry among the people to the extent that on thursday last elder greene was requested to visit the neighborhood and hold a meeting he attended to yesterday there VU M a good gathering of the neighbors neighbor amongst them being mr seals the of nearly all the families in that vaili it seemed that the spirit was on the congregation during the we ko noar A and inree that elder iros reading and talking and all aed ed deeply interested at the eio epif e seals expressed himself as L e t the mormon religion was toe only y true one since beginning this letter I 1 have heard beard from fro M elders F brown and read head in terrapin valley through mr john bailes at whose house the elders held a meeting yesterday sunday which was well attended and at which they blessed two children mr bailes informs me that no baptisms have yet place there but that on thursday of this week himself and 1886 editor deseret news in your issue of last evening you took occasion to criticise criticism critic ise and I 1 believe unjustly the wording sentiment and if I 1 fear ear the intent of a series of div five e short rt lectures on the subject of psychology delivered before the teachers of tile the S summer ummer institute now being held hed in this city the subject of the lectures was not chosen choshin by the lecturer himself but was assigned him by the pr president resident of the institute with the special view as he said of exhibiting its relation to the work ot of teaching achins te As the lecturer I 1 undertook the duty requested of me innocent of any other motive than that expressed by the president of the institute and the good of those who patiently listened to my words As I 1 am not by any means a sp specialist on psychology and as but fe few w of my y audience were to say familiar with the subject I 1 announced in my opening lecture that I 1 should treat the subject not with scientific precision but in a homely common place way the injustice I 1 have to co complain M lalain of begins uy by basing the criticism on a brief summary of one lecture consisting of isolated statements given by the reporter with no other view than simply to outline the subject as aa heard beard for the general news reader from such a report it is not likely that the sentiments of the lectures could be fully or properly communicated ei either therIn in their spirit or intent again the farst four paragraphs of 01 the editorial deferred ie erred to may be dismissed as having no bearing whatever on the character of the lectures except by suggestive inference the three paragraphs following quoted from the herold herald are in the main correct as reports of this thia kind go out but the deductions from them are incorrect I 1 am ain sure that everyone every one who listened to the lectures is as much surprised as myself at the distorted view taken laken of a very plain matter and wonders how so much could be made out of so little the object of the lecturer in referring to protoplasm was to place mind before his hearers in ita simplest known medium of matter whether organized or not being unessential to tue purpose in view that they might perceive then the same general characteristics that is senal sensibility b alit comprehension and will that are I 1 found in the higher and more com p licater forms of animal life and thus show that mind is an endowment from the creator and the cause of organization and not the result of it and that the higher the organization of the matter enveloping the mind the greater is its power of manifestation how can there be anything in this Is not there not progression in mental and phy physical development if so wherein lies iles the harm in stating it especially ally when such statements la Is to effect a good purpose whether in protoplasm or in the infant cam the matter which environs the spirit is crude and whichever standpoint we take open observation proves the fact of development from the tur eless amoeba to the cell like and higher forms from the in taut lant child to the grown man or woman what higher conception can we have of god and the human spirit than that he is the author of our being and that we are his bis progressive children much of the article criticizing criticising critic ising the reporters brief is taken up in an argument with darwin and huxley on atals theory of evolution with which the lectures before the institute had bad nothing whatever to do besides thus lighting fighting an absent enemy the writer has resorted to ridicule he should remember that ridicule is not reason and that when resorted to is said to indicate a lurking lurkin ft consciousness of a weak or doubtful cause I 1 lam am charged with confounding the terms sense and organs of 01 sense if the writer will take the pains to examine the notes taken by any one present at the lecture he will discover that a clear distinction was drawn between the meaning meaning of these two terms a as each was clearly clearl defined in justice to ake the readers of the NEWS to the members of the institute and to myself I 1 have thought it necessary to make this brief reply to an article that I 1 know abounds in gross errors and consequently whose tendency is not to good yours respects respectfully ally JOHN R PARK the foregoing fore goine appears to call for 8 some ome comments on the part of the NEWS but for want of space to today day we defer making them until tomor to mor row ed
