Show correspondence THE IDAHO INFAMY the law wrested to debar mor mons from even teaching school BINGHAM co idaho march 21 1886 editor deseret dejerez news I 1 presume there is no part of the united states where the rights of the people eople have been more trampled upon upa el by y corrupt legislative bodies or car pet bag officials than iu iii idaho especially p e ally bingham county through the operations of the test oath no latter saint can hold huy any office of et profit or trust in the territory but up to march we had the privilege or of controlling our schools through our trustees who were elected according to law but our county school superintendent in has given instructions that unless they take the test oath they are removed from office and are requested to forward to him at once the names of three good and true men who can take the oath or the district will lose the amount of money appropriated for the benefit of schools now in school districts like ours where these good and true men cannot be found who can take the infamous test oath we are under tile the necessity of either losing the appropriation pria tion or importing the necessary good and true and of the two evils we choose the least and would rather loose the money than associate with traitors who to gain a paltry office could take an infamous and unconstitutional tut ional test oath to this we submit as gracefully as possible as it is done under pretense of law but accompanying compan compa nying y i ng the letter of county supt bupt J 0 house ho u se i ir one addressed to mrs sarah A baker of teton idaho a copy of which I 1 enclose now mr editor by anat color of law does the territorial supt bupt of public instruction render a decision ire regarding arding the school law to the effect that a member of the mormon church is not eligible as a teacher of the public schools on the ground of his teach eftig crime erime to be right etc tnt now ow if this rendition of the school law by this celebrated boise blackstone is a fair sample of the intelligence of the Territorial supt bupt of st ruction I 1 think the sooner he resigns his position and attends as a pupil at one of the public schools in his neighborhood bo the thel better lt awill will be for the public school interest of the territory of idaho now on the strength of the tha decision of his chief county supt bupt J C house has bas revoked the cert certificate ideate of mrs sarah garab A baker aaker without cause lie ile knows well that no sectarian or denominational doctrines are taught in the public schools of this county and mrs baker has neither violated the spirit or letter of see sec 89 oi of tile school law of idaho the highhanded high handed proceedings of the territorial and bounty county superintendent of schools is an outrage upon the majority of the citizens of bingham bangham county and demands a vigorous and united protest against the euf enforcement or cement of the order which will bring disgrace to its authors and when generally geu brally known by the people it will vill meet tile the condemnation i justly deserves we are now robbed of every right which is dear to every liberty loving citizen to vote to hold office or have any voice in local government we simply pay our taxes 8 a and nd mind our own business though 1 captured we are not conquered but will patiently wait for the change which is near at hand the spirit of 1176 76 still lives we will contend for our right taxation without representation cannot long survive in free amer ica if A yours very respectfully LIBERTY THE COUNTY superintendents superintendent LETTER OXFORD idaho march 13 1886 sarah arah A porker parker teton idaho the territorial superintendent of public instruction has haa rendered a decision regarding the school law to the effect that a member ot of the mormon church is not eligible as a teacher of the public schools on the ground among other things that the teacher who teaches crime to be right violates the duty imposed in the law and if teaching be disguised under the pretext of a political sectarian or denominational doctrine it violates the spirit of section 39 school law forfeits his or her wages and the right of the district to 0 share in the public school monies and should have the permit or certificate revoked by the county superintendent I 1 do therefore hereby revoke your certificate no 7 issued november 4 1885 the same being cancelled on the records of the superintendents office of bingham county idaho respectfully J C HOUSE superintendent public schools ot ed bingham county idaho |
