they proceeded in a body to superintendent knapps Knapp 19 office and asked him what accommodations the company would provide for them while detained herp her stating that a great portion of them had not the necessary means of remaining mr knapp communicated to headquarters at san ban francisco and received a reply to the effect that the company would make no provisions for the passengers sels as they were not under their care the company having suspended business prior to their arrival here this thin raised the ire of the passengers and they immediately appointed a committee of three to consult with an attorney and ascertain if possible what legal standing they had la in the pro prem M see sea judge rhodes was retained by hem but what the outcome will be has not been learned judge the meeting arrived at the conclusion that should the she roads roade refuse to handle pullman oars care and reinstate rel instate the men who have been laid off for talking taking part in the strike the boycott will no be at an end gdan OGDEN utah june 80 1894 the rio grande western was tied up this morning and no trains carrying pull man cars care will arrive here until the difficulty Is 18 settled the general opinion among the railroad men today to Is that tomorrow will see the tying up of the union pacific A special meeting of the A R V U will be held beld tonight and no doubt will result in the closing of all the lines FROM MONDAYS MONDAY 5 DAMY DAILY JU JULY LY 2 it was pretty generally believed that the meeting of 0 the strikers hold held yesterday afternoon would result in a complete tie up this morning of the union pacific and rio bio orande western roads butruch was not altogether the case came though the boycott is on to an extent that may prove very disastrous to the people of utah as an well as to those of other parts of the country the through passenger train no 2 of the rio bio grande western which was due in this city at arrived on time and departed according to the regular schedule at and strange to say carried a pullman A large crowd of the strikers probably two hundred were at the depot at the time and some of them sought to consult with the engineer and firemen but mr welby protested against such euch a course of procedure and assisted by chief pratt and a squad of fifteen policemen lic li cemen emea carried his bis point and the train went on its way without any communication between the employee emp loyes of the road and the men who have ceased to be such by striking there were no violent demonstrations and none are expected today what may occur after tonight not a railway official was found today that cared to express an opinion inquiry at the rio bio orande grande office this afternoon caused mr heintz to say may that the latest advises advices ad vices so far as they were able to ascertain were that trains non NOB 2 and 4 operating on their road between here and denver were not being inter erupted both carry pullmans no 4 due here from denver at this afternoon was two hours late but was headed this way and was expected to co arrive all right strikes have been inaugurated on the salina balina and trains and neither of them moved a wheel today all freight traffic is 19 practically suspended the exception so far as the rio bio grande Is concerned W was the arrival this thin morning of two car loads of castle onto gate coal mr welby expects more coal in tomorrow abut but is certain of nothing A telephone message was received by C U 8 13 marshal brigham wa last midnight from superintendent welby of the rio bio grande western railroad asking him to send four of laid hl deputies to ogden oden to assist in getting out oat the eastbound train which reaches salt lake biake about 8 it a m marshal brigham and bis bin men accordingly left on a special for the junction city at 4 this morn morning ing and came down with the train on schedule time a pullman car being attached to it there was no trouble experienced HOL cod by the officers this afternoon at al 4 six nix deputy marshals again accompanied by their chief started out once more for ogden on a special with the in tion of seeing safely through the east bound which leaves that place at 7 pm the strike to Is also very much of a mixed proposition on the union pa facile cille some trains are allowed to run others are side tracked and connot move until conditions change the local train for milford which ol of course does not carry pullmans was allowed to depart on time this morning but not so with the ogden train which leaves here dally daily at am a m the utah nevada the tooele thoele coun county ty train and the branch however aro are involved in tho tie up and are consequently not operating today the worst of all ja Is the delay of the morning mail train grain for the east which is held bold at the depot awai awaiting ging permission of the A B V U to move out what are you doing in freight matters matter was asked of mr eccles b by a B ewa representative today 11 nothing ap he replied absolutely abool uW nothing we can only wait to aee what develops deve lopp I 1 have just arrived home and dont hardly harder know the ca con of affairs and therefore do not wish to talk on the matter at all i the practical workings of the preat str strike were unfolded to a salt lak audience for the first time th this aate afternoon the regular ogden ap train stood in the union pacific yard yo with steam up and engineer ecles standing by his engine ready for ahn th word of command to advance Q was however a captain without i company tor for the indispensable mai to the left had bad left otherwise and w not to be observed by the many observed ere en who had flocked to the aroun grounds some out of curiosity others no do dou doubt with the hope that the train would gt a move on oin 1 1 some time this afternoon after noo and anci others still in a perfunctory wa being or having been employed emp loyes and aa customer cus tomed to be on hand at such alin toniea it was said by some of the by bystander wat that they had bad been approached WI with an offer of a job to fire to ogden b no one bit at the bait and it any one 0 had it is questionable if ff he would ba barei a been permitted to make the run as aa ext perien parlen ced engineers demand ezert expert firemen and will work with ny others it thus appears that th t brotherhood of locomotive engines engineers Engine err is not a party to the great movement or lack ot of movement rather at Is leaah not yet deputy marshal boman cann Cannon Ji one of the four deputies who went on U to ogden this morning informed i NEWS reporter today that the tie u up on the U P the most cormaci complete thing of the kind be had ever wa hessed in a graphic way he dc d scribed ascribed how the bags of mail I 1 laj around the depot there awaiting chip ments ment as high as homes and I 1 jon lines of cars care are standing on the r casisi filled with perishable articles in tr a including meat and fruit so go far mr cannon says everything has beeb orderly on the part of the railroad ad rne men the trains to gat barfield lold yaw ra 4 today as an usual and may not be incle ed in the boycott the salt bait lake 1 abos J ios angeles does not operate pullman Pulle mamil and are conveying their patrons uy aw and book back as aa usual gone no manager clayton clay ton fears no brou trou tro whatever from the strike the e happy feeling prevails among it eulals qt the utah central Woeten holm morris the dealers were seen today and asked to the amount of coal in the city at ts present prea ent mr morris replied 11 there or I 1 ifal ja probably a supply of five days coal co al ou hand certainly not more than as days and should the strike not be settled before that the result here can easily be imagined it W simply means that the street railway companies the electric light and dw deft eret erel woollen wills mills and all large fw fae tories and manufacturing plants wt have to suspend operations for jack evv of fuel all of the companies named as aa many mally others in the city use coal which produces just as daiil much and costs a great deal len left money but today they were oom polled to buy lump lamp coal and only aa satisfactory and insufficient amounts of that they realize that the strike may bring great losses to 40 them the th fact act is ie that unless there is ie a settlement noon BUOO the city will be left in absolute darkness in a lev few nights the street MN cars will stop running and hundreds ol of persons be thrown out of employment nt the strike has caused the officials ol of the great salt lake hot springs railway company to hit upon a little piece of enterprise that is very much appreciated the suspension of pass nger enger train service between here and ogden set mr bamberger to thinking and this afternoon he ran a special train from here to centerville Cent erville with several junction CJ city ty passengers aboard from Cent centerville erville they will be carried to their destination by stage another train making similar connection will leave here at tomorrow morning there was a big meeting of the local submitted to disinterested parties the good people of chicago the powerful civic federation made maae up of of the leading reformers of that city have appealed for it the press even those unfavorable to union labor has demanded it but in vain As a last resort the delegates representing the american railway union in convention assembled after a careful consideration of the ome case by unanimous voice ordered a boycott on the pullman balg palace ce oars cars and equipment aid order taking effect at noon on june ass As a consequence we now find ourselves confronted not only by the pullman company but by the combined railway corporations through their general managers and it is now a fight between the corporations represented by the lenoral Mana managers gerst association as awes allies of pullman and all railway employee without reference to organization As such we want every good mans hap to the end noted can the A R U depend on you to call on the officers of all labor lengthy discussion of the question it was decided by a unanimous vote vole to obey the orders of preal president dabs and an adjournment was tadeu shtil this afternoon at three immediately upon chief justice merritt taking bin bia seat la in the third district court this morning attorney parley ii williams arose to present a petition on behalf of the receivers of the union pacific railroad company in regard to the refusal of the employee emp loyes hereof within this Territory to perform their duties duller and seeding relief from this ibis court in we be promises premises if said counsel these men were upon reflection willing to resume work the receivers would like to have them do so no otherwise be would have to ask thin court to issue directions to the he receivers to discharge them permanently he H also now desired to a further application to his bis honor tor for an injunction to prevent those of the railroad employee emp loyes who had bad ceased working from interfering with those hose who were still at work judge merritt suggested that mr williams had beuer better go and file separate papers in the different court districts within which the trouble had bad occurred counsel presumed that this court had jurisdiction in this matter throughout the territory and that it if the he papers were filed here that would be sufficient of 0 arse he suggested the other judges might be glad to u assis if necessary J judge adge merritt said he was willing to take his share in the matter lot let the other district judges fudges do the same attorney williams here to is a
