Show ROAD TO THE COAST fir C 0 whittemore of this thia olty city who no has hag long been an earnest advocate of 01 the scheme to build a road irom from the city ty to the coast and who hum has t much uch of his time of late at los ioa A 11 Og geles elea has submitted the following to w tile the president aud and board of directors of 01 the chamber of commerce gentlemen while on my mv way to oft angeles in december 1892 1 I received at san Franc lac leoj a letter from president esl dent donnellan and secretary sears arb of the salt lake chamber of 01 COlU merce erce requesting me as member of the chamber tl ambe of commerce corn com coln atee cittee on project projected ea railways rail waye to devote what oat time I 1 could s spare pare in the interest of t tile 1 proposition about which so m much ucb 46 been en said and ancl so 80 little accod wished nn isnec namely ane building of a rall rail WRY line from this B city to los LOB angeles rand d the pacific coast in response to this request tJ devoted considerable time during my three months stay in southern california to increasing the interest that I 1 found already egisti g among all classes of people in this part of the country in regard to this matterand investigating as to the aid that would be exten extended deu frum that quarter to such an enter ariae arl e while I 1 found a great interest manifested by all classes of people in the project and a great desire existing that the road should be built here without del ay iy y still there seemed to be very little disposition to aid except ta k the promotion of this enterprise which when accomplished would aid salt lake and los angeles angelea more than any fitly fifty things that have ever happened to them iu in this particular I 1 was very much struck with the similarity simi laricy between the people here and there in my investigation of thle this project I 1 found in what is designated as southern california proper which embraces the five southern counties of that state and which would be tributary to a ros roa built from this city to los An angeles geless a population of about occupying a country coultry and owning and cultivating a soil that would furnish its owner with products from which could te ke realize more money to the acre thau than any land on the face ol 01 0 the globe I 1 found a country whose fruit and vegetable products amounted to nearly in 1892 1 I found a country that is as yet only partially settled which will in time and which is c isable of supporting a population of and whose products will eventually amount to at least in addition to this condition of prosperity I 1 found a people who were without coal iron copper lead silver or any precious metals with which our country abounds as a consequence I 1 found a people atio manufactured comparatively ively little but who depended upon countries east and north of 01 toem for almost everything consumed aside from fruits and vegetables a people who sent away annually worth of fruits vegetables vegetable and wines in return tor for them receiving groceries clothing and manufactured pro note necessary for their daily use As an actual result of this condition of affairs I 1 found that prices upon all aured articles and commodities were much higher than here aud and that from LO 10 to 10 was paid for coal consumed and a very inferior article it was one ton oil ol 01 rock book springs or PI pleasant velley coal being equal to about one and a halt half tons of the coal that they pay 10 to 15 fur As a result of this investigation I 1 naturally became very much impressed with the idea that southern california was just the country tn t salt lake needs to catch by building a railway line to it from many duany interviews with bankers merob merchants ants business men farmers and laboring men I 1 became further impressed with the fact that bat salt lake city should take a vigorous hold bold of this railway project anu get gel a line extended into nevada the people of southern california would come to their assistance and build the west halt hair of the road I 1 found in los angeles a railway cor horation po ration in existence known as the los angeles terminal railway company which was organized about five years ago for the se of building a line through los angeles and the coast to the harbor of ban pedro and to the cities in the vicinity of los angelea Ac An gelep in order to be in a position to operate cooperate co with another railway company who should desire to build into that ibal country from the east this cor horation pu po ration has already expended about jin in g rights of way through the city and surrounding country and to the harbor and lug ing suitable harbor facilities so that this company is in an excellent position to join with a similar corporation at this end anu ani carry this great reat enter prise to completion we are fully acquainted with the great advantages will accrue in the building oi of th s roso roa it is ueless u eless elees to lo sa more on toia subject rhe he great question that now presents itself la is now can this project be inaugurated so as to insure success the man or the company cuna of men who will solve this problem aregust now in great demand 1 understand that the question tion Is to come up tr fi r consideration by you today for this reason I 1 deemed it ad disable to make this ibis report to you trust ing that it may aid you in your deliberations upon this all absorbing subject in my judgment however the present seems a very inopportune time in which to attempt the commence commencement mant of this project the citizens of salt lake have just 7 promised a magnificent bonus to a copper refining company who are to co 9 locate here which lias not been paid and from all present indications will not be raced rai ed and paid for several months to undertake to raise the amouri amount tto to properly start orto or to induce others to start a railway to deep creek and to the coast until the smelter bonus has baa been disposed of would be useless and would certainly result in failure pur for this reason it would be much better to allow this question to remain until fall and then with renewed energy and redoubled efforts and with no obstacles in the way again take up the cry of on to deep creek and the coastal 12 and lot let nothing interfere until the object is attained now let us turn our attention in another direction from which source if the opportunity presented Is s acted upon salt lake can receive untold benefit namely that ol of properly placing cur city with its wonderful climate and resources before the millions of people who will visit the worlds World lio fair As an I 1 understand it nothing has as yet boen been done towards advertising this city aside from the exhibits that are to be placed la in the utah building A salt lake or utah souvenir should begotten be gotten up handsome enough and valuable enough to be kept by those fortu fortunate n ate enough to receive one these should be distributed judiciously while the fair is in progress and from this time until it closes a competent committee should be established in the utah headquarters where information or of all kinds should be imparted and people induced to visit this section this is a matter of vital importance and should be taken up by the chamber of commerce and business men jenft association without a mom entys further delay no such opportunity for advertising the resources of this city and country will be presented agal again n inthis age |
