Show SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION the attendance at the sunday school union meeting hold held last evening nov 21 in the fourteenth ward assembly aae embly hall was unusually large all the city wards except the fifth ninth and twenty third were numerously represented and also the sch schools of union big cottonwood cotton wood south district and sugar house stake superintendent T C griggs presided preen led the excellent ezo ellent singing exercises exercise were given by the thirteenth ward sunday school choir THE LECTURE liBO TUBE elder horace cummings delivered an instructive and entertaining lecture upon the subject of Attea attention tion how to secure it and how to retain it when obtained prefacing his hie remarks by a definition of the sub subject eject attention was of two kinds that which Is obtained by compulsion and that obtained or given willingly by the student the successful teacher must obtain the willing attention of the children and in leading their minds from the known to the unknown comparisons must be made with familiar objects for instance to tell a child what a lion is iss show it a oat and explain its character and by explaining that the lion is merely a very large oat the child has a very good conception of the subject to present the lesson to the children in an indirect way leaving them something to discover themselves is I 1 RD an other way of obtaining closer attention the love of approbation possessed by nearly all children may be gratified by a wise ta teacher solier to very good advantage in U getting the attention of the members of the class clan then there are others of the class clan who like to be looked up to te by the rest of the class clam who when they have become interested aid the teacher in interesting we the others A A most axe excellent alent plan to te obtain a at to is to Mers intersperse perse the lesson with an interesting story anecdote or or practical illustration As a reward for early attendance promise a good story to all who will be on time the following sunday and the children will not only be early but will be moat sure to come every sunday the teacher who can keep some seme thing ahead of his bis class clan something for the children to look forward to with eager anticipation can ai always ways interest his class A teacher who the love respect and esteem of his children can much more easily obtain and retain their attention and teachers should seek to ingratiate themselves into the affections of their class ELDER S A WILSON of the nineteenth ward school in RD an interesting address explained the method of teaching adopted in the nineteenth ward sabbath school where a yearly gramme pro is arranged in accordance with the instructions given in the bunday school Qui Gul which if generally adopted would very tory materially increase the efficiency of f the work done in the schools and make them more interesting and attractive td the children GRIGGS commended to the earnest consideration oon sidera of all sunday school workers the plan adopted in the nineteenth ward and suggested that the plan be studied by the superintendents and teachers I 1 with a view to their general in all the schools schoola of this stake the lessons are planned and laid out for the whole year for the four departments of the graded sunday schools eo boole and present such a variety of subjects and lessons adopted to each department as will furnish interesting matter that is sure eure to make the sunday school a very attractive institution A few remarks were made by elders joseph height and hiram pickett Pio kett of cassia stake and elder lakin of this city special sunday school missionaries in this stake teachers and superintendents of this stake were specially requested to obtain a set of the graded lesson cards card already referred to 1 acquaint themselves with their oo 00 contents tents and present them to their schools and be prepared to adopt them in all the schools of this stake the coming year the cards can be obtained at the juvenile instructor ory otice ea the choir sang lot let us oft speak kind words to each other and elder john alford pronounced the baselic tion the fourteenth ward school will furnish the musical exercises at the next meeting and a practical illustration of graded school work will be given by one of the departments of the nineteenth ward school to show the method of using the pro gramme cards as now adopted in that school joe JOB hyrax PARRY becy |
