Show THE JORDAN RIVER the following has been handed to no for publication dictated sept 15 1892 dr seymour B young city my dear doctor I 1 take fleure pleure in replying to your I 1 request to furnish you a statement of results in my examination of samples of water taken from the jordan river you will doubt lew less remember that on the th occasion of our visiting the city newer pump august last we found a large flow of foul matter entering the from a pipe which the he attendant ide da as the newer bowel overflow liiv you will also alao remember that at pipe that time I 1 took from the river two amm of water one which I 1 A from a place about jlou yards above the sewer aeder pipe and A the obber nth B vil from a position about the alir aam y distance below the outflow these thea were to ananyin and copl cal examination with the follow lag ing results 1 CHEMICAL ANALYSIS sample all A taken above the sewer aeder ann contains after filtration outlet 1 chlorene Chlor lne as chlon deg the bai tte taken above the sewer and th that t adt lecter belo that I 1 determined ill to mi other tests so on the loth of present month I 1 visited the 1116 1 second time for the purpose of again the sewer outflow aaa ea of taking additional samples i as aa on the former visit a large fla foul matter entering the 11 alve so samples of water were taken 1 VIET as M aa f low iowa A A all fully in constantly diminishing far down the samples taken titles quantities lian the t 0 stream show how the au suspended ded matters in a more fully lly din integrated condition concerning the analyses show that the jordan biver even above the place of pollution from the sewer ewer pipe is a very im streams tream such cuon a condition might pure Krec expected 3 hoWO however VOrt from the kind of 1 land and through which the river ito flows wo and from its own sluggish nature the chlorine present in the water la Is excessive but IRMO contents content of of chlor ellorin eh lorin like are characteristic utah waters springs pring well river and arte artesuk sUn this to la doubtless doubt leu due doe to the abundance of alkaline chlorides chloride i par tie Warly common salt in our oila molls chlorine Chlorin ein in portable waters existing as la is usually the ease in combination with alkaline mews as aa soluble chlor ides idee is in not of itself a source of danger unless it be derived from decompo decomposing sini matton matters there Is a difference of train grain of chlorine per gallon of water between sample AA taken above the newer and sample ample bly BB taken below this thia amount is seen oen to be derived from the sewer itself and li is therefore of very much greater dan ger than are the 14 grains of chlorine per gallon existing in the water above the no newer flower and presumably preau mably derived mostly from the saline aline constituents of the oil organic matter is present in quantity the large amount of free ammonia la in the water results from the decomposition of nitrogenous matter and the albumin old a ammonia montt indicate nitrogenous refuse till still posed I 1 As ato to the degree of organic contamination aaion allowable in potable waters mr Win Wa aklyn klyn an english specialist in water tor has taid baid iq 1 I should be to regard with some ik water yielding a consi considerable dorable quant pe ammonia along alonet with parte of alburni nold ammonia per mil aion ou Albumin old ammonia above pot per million begins to be a very suspicious suspicions sign and over ought to condemn a water absolutely s you may compare these amounts wn with the 16 18 free ammonia and the 5 62 2 al 1 um ammonia per existing in the river water you will see ateo abo that the slow alow tream stream to is not appreciably purified in a 8 miles journey from the place of its great pollution of course it is understood that the water of the jordan is not used extensively ten I 1 ivel for drinking purposes an and it I 1 ie very ery clearly apparent that any bu human a being ng who would drink fro from m the river ver at any place below the newer flower would be running great risks risk of danger to health and life the river folea is vily charged with organic filth of it veritable sewage and ani animal nials drinking the water are endangered dang ered there would seem to be special danger in the case of cows drinking the water chemically considered the jordan water is ie a fertile composition compo ution for the development of bacterial organism organ feme and germs germ of contagion entering the water would multiply mot moist rapidly but many of these points point belong to the province of a physician than to that of the chemist chemi it please pleam give me your opinion as to the indications indication particularly specifying the dangers dangen or absence of such attending the consumption of the water by miloh cattle hoping to see you soon and converse con verae with you on the matter I 1 am respectfully youris
