Show NO LONGER A LIBERAL THE following letter was handed to us this morning by a friend who thought it worthy of publication be cause the writer has been such a well known pronounced liberal Libe raland 21 2 1 and is shows the drift of fee feeling lingin in reference to division which prevails in most moot parts of the territory As to the writ ers views in reference to Republic republicanism ati and democracy they should be taken if at all with a grin grain of salt he is a shee whose opinions are largely governed by his pecuniary interests and also a person of rash assertion and wild conclusion we give his letter for what it to is worth SALT LAKE CITY UTAH february oth 1892 george valle esq chairman millard county liberal committee allmore utah dear sir your letter of february let 4 asking me to represent millard county in the territorial liberal convention to hand in reply will say say that I 1 find I 1 am unable to comply wit with h your request for reasons herein set forth I 1 have as you well know always been I a liberal and have been identified with that party since its inception I 1 have always alway am and today tod la opposed to the union of church and and state and have ever opposed ecclesiastical interference in any mannet manner with politics believing that raft and alid statecraft t are as opposite as the polls I 1 was a liberal when to be so meant social ostracism a state of society t that ninety per cent of the liberal party know nothing about but I 1 know this state sta e of things could not always remain so As the people beca me intelligent and the free school system P planted anted in every hamlet in our territory th the I 1 ideas deas thoughts principles and opinions of the masses would be broadened and uplifted from the rut they had for so go many years been grovelling gro vellin velling in and when F the electric light of amer american can ideas and principles became impregnated and diffused in their midst they would follow the new light and if not already so become loyal true and faithful to the great and grand principles of A merican american institutions tut ions that hope that arthen had has been in a measure realized and today I 1 find the people divi dinst on party lines in national lem cn I 1 also note that the democratic party to whom jhb people of utah were led to believe they owed 4 allegiance to and the success of whose q policy they were told was the mecca of 4 all their hopes has taken an aggressive 4 stand and made such an active campaign that today the territorial legislature egis lature is overwhelmingly damoc democratic tie and they can kaaa any measure the they choose to foster the interests of the their r party upon the people utah should hat naturally liral and geographically be republican and when a proper presentation of the facts are laid before the people when the people understand that the republican party is the party of loyalty of progress and of protection to all american interests and when we can show them that the democratic party is in a party of promises ever holding the cup to their lips but breaking it to their hearts that they are being led by men who for years trailed our count rys flag in the mirland mire and who carusd tena of thousands of lives to be sacrificed made tens lens of thousands of widows filled the land with orphans and almost bankrupted the a I 1 tion hon when these theme facts are made known to them and their intelligence and justice I 1 appealed to we need have no fear of the r result their loyalty to the flag and country will bever never again be questioned by longer adhering to the liberal party we are giving the democrats an open field and when the former party is disrupted which it surely must bebe be we will be found with the bag to hold the game having y long since been captured if the liberals of salt lake county wish to retain their liberal organization I 1 have nothing to say aay they are strong enough to hold their own and can elect their own depre Benta tives to the legislature but we who 4 number only fifty in millard county can only stand and look on at the turmoil of political political strife without daring to take y action with them we can I 1 feel conn ie dent carry millard county for that glorious florl I 1 old republican party we can I 1 place a man in the legislature that I 1 will be an honor to us that will represent a principle who will be bb honest and aggressive for our best interests who will not be subservient to the wishes of the majority but who though he stands alone will stand fearlessly for the right for loyalty and ancl for the best interests of his constituents for these and other reasons equally pertinent tI I 1 could not longer affiliate with or enter tle the late convention of the liberal party pany and I 1 feel confident that you and the liberals of millard county will when you weigh the great issue at stake at the coming election agree with me and henceforth throw our influence and lend our voice and pen and give our votes for the success of that loyal party that never yet had a traitor tra in its ranks that have ever stood for american interests and american industries for american men and women and their prosperity and for the honor of that splendid emblem of our country in every clime our flag yours truly CHARLES CRANE |
