the family residence at oak street the deceased decease J was lying face down downward ward in a large pool of blood with a ghastly wound in the right side aide of tb the e head just above the ear the brains of the dead man together with pieces of his skull were scattered about the room in all directions Athis at his side and partly under the lower limbs of the body was a single barre Jed shot gun through which mr solomon met his tragic death attached to the trigger of the fowling piece was a heavy evid end tied so as to form a loop and into this it is supposed the unfortunate fortunate man put his foot thus discharging the weapon while reaching for fornis lais rani rod on a table near by mr solomon was alone in the house bouse at the time of the fearful fita fatality lity on finding hid bid father in the condition described young mr solomon at once gave the alarm and in a few minutes the house was filled with neigh borts bora anxious to lend any assistance within their power but all to no avail the leaden messengers had done their work by removing the side and upper part of the head bead and embedding themselves in the joists foists of the coiling ceiling almost directly above where the dead man lay mr solomon was wag the father of six children ranging from four to twenty one years of age his wife died about two years ago and since that time it to is said that mr solomon has been inclined to seek solitude it was rumored that his death was due to self destruction while in a fit of despondency this theory however is contradicted by his bis relatives and those who knew him best coroner harris was summoned to the scene of the fatal shooting and gave notice of the inquest which was held at the undertaking establishment lish ment of joseph E taylor at 10 today E J solomon son of the deceased testified I 1 was absent from home yesterday afternoon short shortly after 4 oo lock when I 1 returned I 1 I 1 found my father lying on the kitchen floor dead in a pool of blood with a shotgun pointing towards his head there was a ghastly wound on the right side of the head never heard my father express his bis intention to commit suicide he was not that kind of a man I 1 placed the string on the gun gua a few days before while out hunting the string formed a loop through which I 1 put my right arm and carried the gun with the muzzle downward with my hands in my pocket forgot to remove the string on coming home do not know what my father was doing with the gun when he met with the accident if he intended to go hunting I 1 was not aware of it E allcock testified I 1 have known the deceased for six montal mont hf bL he was always jovial and cooj good natured when I 1 met him yesterday afternoon about four I 1 went to mr solomons house on oak street in company with his son who has just testified young mr solomon went into the house and rushed out immediately afterwards saying that his father was dead I 1 entered the house and found the deceased with a gunshot wound in his bis head from which blood and brains were flowing at his side was a shotgun with a string on the trigger the string was thus attached two or three days before by EJ E J solomon son of the dead man while we were out hunting together james solomon brother of the deceased testified the deceased has always been very careless in handling fire arms on several occasions in years past the deceased has had narrow escapes from death deatti by the accidental discharge of his gun in fact he was so crimin criminally vAlly careless in this respect that myself and other brothers refused to allow him to accompany us on our sporting expeditions in my opinion he mel me his death by the accidental discharge of his gun while endeavoring to extract a cartridge and clean the gun jre preparatory to go hunting ducts ducks today I 1 do not think he has had any intention of committing suicide at any tim alm he be has always been an daiy easygoing going fellow never troubling himself about anything A E solomon a nephew of the deceased fl ned ed A accord i ng to the position of my uncles body and the apparatus belonging to the gun I 1 erm am of the opinion that he came to his bis death while cleaning hisgun preparatory to going duck hunting he informed me on saturday last that it was his intention b to go shooting today providing that hv he could get er a pair of rubber boots this closed the taking of testimony and the jury rendered the following verdict OP UTAH county of salt lake j at an inquest held at east first south street in the city of salt lake on the fth day of january 1891 before T E harris coroner or of said raid county upon the body of edwin solomon then and there lying dead by the jurors whose names are hereunto subscribed the jurors on their oaths do say from the evidence presented that we the jury do find the deceased edwin solomon came to his death on the ath day of sa january nuary at no oak street in salt lake city ity utah from a gunshot wound in the right side of the head accidentally inflicted by himself while in the act ot of preparing his gun for shooting in testimony whereof the said jurors as well as the said coroner have hereunto set their
