| Show THE MUSICAL FESTIVAL the first performance of the second annual festival I 1 of the salt lake choral society was given june ath at the tabernacle putting the audience at a moderate estimate there must have been about five thousand persons persona present the interior of the vast building presented a beautiful spectacle there were some improvements made specially for the occasion the number of electric lights in the body of the hall had bad been increased on the right and on the left of the great organ were incandescent arches while between it its domes in the centre scintillated a brilliant star of light in red white and blue at professer Prof radcliffe mounted the organ seat mat and opened with webers oberon overture this work was handled with ability and artistic excellence and the vast audience appreciated with delight the magnificent ent rendition of this overture then came forward genius of music conductor stephens who was received with great enthus lam at a wave 0 of t his baton the chorus of arose with military order wagners magners Wag ners hail bright abode from tan ser was then given by the choral society the string quartette the piano and organ in their rendering of this part the chorus showed the careful earnest and industrious training received at the hands of mr stephens for the third number on the pro gramme myron W whitney was set down to give the two grenadiers Grena diers he stepped forward and was warmly irre eted As his strong strone sonorous tones rolled out filling every corner of the large building there them was adueh of rapturous delight which at the conclusion arke out into loud and prolonged plaudits pl audits he was presented with a basket of flowers by mr stephens on the part of the choral society for an encore he gave 11 who treads from Moz arts magic flute in this thin he also captured the audience as an he be ended on a full resonant E flat bringing out the note without apparent effort or studied labor the fourth number was a duo 0 love P 1 from verdis la traviata Trav lata anti given by mrs lizzie thomas edward and mr george D mn MM edward has a soft sympathetic voice and on thip occasion it was rendered doubly so by reason of the tenderness and sentiment of the oo selection lection mr sang in a clear sweet ballad tenor style and his bis musical voice blended charmingly with that of mrs F edward dward the star of the evening miss emma thursby next came forward and sang 11 thou charming bird 11 this piece demands a flute accompaniment aud and a gentleman from fort douglas sergeant pickett proved a very capable performer on this octa occasion sion A charming bird in truth Is 18 miss thursby Thu reby and she sings binge as if her mouth were full of feathered warblers warb lers she gave an encore repeating the same piece and was received with enthusiastic delight in acknowledging the applause given her by the audience she gracefully brought mr pickett the flute player to the front with her in her second song the Polon polonaise alse 11 from mignon she was again encored for an encore she gabe the scotch ballad somebody 11 the lost chord was given by the male chorus of the apollo club H 8 krouse conductor the piece was ex rendered mr easton eastonn s tenor solo 1 1 l I too have dreamt dreama 1 1 from lucretia Luc retla borgia was beautifully given he was in splendid voice tend and sang magnificently he responded to an encore with annie baurle and ga gave gale le it with fine and tender effect the spanish mandolin and guitar club gave waves of the danube an instrumental selection the picturesque costume of the members of this club Is h in itself attractive they performed well and were well received the sex miss snyder miss pratt and the goddard spencer and Easton gave what from vengeance they were as assisted slated by the choral society this was one of the gems of the evening miss snyder was particularly observable in her final D flat the piece was repeated to satisfy the audience the tenth number was a violin solo by willard weibe H S krouse accompanist comp anist he played and responded to an encore with gusins jasorka Mas orka 11 for a second encore he gave the swanee river Jf mr weihe is one of the first if not the very foremost violin performers in the west and very soon his bis re reputation will become national C the concluding number crowned by the tempest 11 by whitney and the chorus was a magnificent effort aud would have been enco encored ored but it was the closing piece |
