mains on third west street between north temple and first north streets committee on waterworks water works Alex alexander anderT T wyatt asked for a rebate on license committee on license mr R welker et al a asked for an extension of water mains from 1 capitol I hill reservoir along the west side of the block in plat J committee on waterworks water works fred green asked for a reb rebate ateon on license committee on license J C conklin et al represented south temple street east of sixth east street as being in a deplorable and almost impassable condition and asked that improvements be made immediately committee on streets george olson asked for an extension of water mains on fifth east street committee on waterworks water works the union pacific railway company asked that thomas cooper enjoined them from constructing a third track upon second bouth th street from east temple street to second west street and asked that their r franchise be so BO modified as to allow a double track had failed to lay pad nd asked that the matter be attended 0 o without further delay committee on waterworks water works irsom M THE COMMITTEE ON FIRE department the committee on fire department to whom was referred the report of the chief of fire department for the quarter coding fling march slat reported that they had bad examined the same and found it correct and recommended that it be filed also that they had examined the recommendations of the chief of fire department in relation to the proposed additions to the present fire ordina ordinances tic and suggested that they be referred to the city attorney with the request that his be formulate the same and return them to the council for approval adopted TEMPORARY SWITCH the rio grande western railway company asked permission to lay a temporary track from sixth west on second south and along seventh west in order to enable the company to haul in gravel by work trains so that the street might be graded in accordance cor dance with the agreement between the company and the city referred to the engineer with power to act TAXES REMITTED in the matter of the petition of the fifteenth ecclesiastical ward asking for remission of taxes the prayer of the petitioners petition ers was granted on recommendation men dation of the city attorney petition of the fifteenth ward belief society for remission of taxes was also granted THE E RAPID TRANSIT TAX in the matter of the resolution offered by mr cohn at a recent meeting of the council to accept 25 per capita tax on each car operated by the salt lake rapid transit company up to january lot let 1892 the city attorney reported that the acceptance of such an amount would be legal adopted IMPORT OP OF THE STREET COMMITTEE the committee on streets made the following recommendations that the petition of W H jennings Jen ninga asking permission to put in a switch from the utah central track to lot 2 block 18 plot plat A be granted that th the or petition of W H Hoff hoffheimer belmer askinis asking for permission to put in a switch from the union pacific track to lot 2 block lot at A be granted that the denver S g lo io grande railway company be notified to keep the streets intersecting with fifth and sixth west streets free from obstructions and that the crossings be planked blanked plan ked as asked for by coates corum that the petition of west side rapid transit company asking that their franchise be amended so as to allow the company to construct its tracks along first west street from sixth south to ninth south be granted adopted LIGHTING proposition the sun vapor street light company represented that it was incorporated under the laws of ohio and made the following propositions positions ro with W t our improved Tm improved proved gasoline burners er which h 1 eh produce a strong and brilliant light equal to coal gas and which are superior to any gasoline burner on the market we will erect of our lamps on turned cedar posts of regulation height at such places in the city as may be design designated atea for lighting purposes and furnish all material and labor necessary to keep clean in gowl good order and repair illegal breakage excepted and light and keep lighted for five years on the philadelphia moon schedule twenty nights in average for 22 per lamp per annum payment to be made in equal monthly installments or we will light and keep lighted said street lamps for five years on the philadelphia moon schedule twenty four nights in average for 2360 2350 per lamp ner der annum payment to be made in equal monthly installments under either of the foregoing propositions we will esset any additional posts sod and lamps wanted by the city and light the same on the afore aforesaid sald conditions and prices provided that no additional lamps shall be erected during the last six months of the contract period except at our election all lamps posts etc furnished by us shall remain our property we will guarantee our light to t 0 o be equal or better than good coal anler gas as light and to be a uniform quality under all conditions and at all seasons of the year for any failure in this respect we are willing to submit to the cancellation of our contract on ten days notice of such failure and on our neglect or inability after such notice to furnish light uniform in quality as above described after our lamps have been located we are willing to move them or any of them to any other streets to in the city where the labor of lighting will be no more difficult for the actual cost of takina up no transporting tranSpOrt ilig and resetting which be per post poet and lamp 01 committee on improvements NOT GRANTED city attorney halls hall to whom was referred the petition of G 1 A alder asking for a corrected deed to certain property reported that the petition did not show such facts aa warranted wArrant edthe the action asked and he recommended that until such facts were presented the petition be not granted adopted the same officer recommended that the petition of lease isaac and W C jennings asking for a deed to certain lands be not granted as the probate court had adjudged the title to the land to be iu in M A langstroth Liang adopted in the matter of the petition of peter moone asking for an exchange of lands with the city the city attorney recommended that the matter be re berred to the proper committee for further investigation adopted SEWERAGE REPORT the committee on sewerage recommended that the petition of WH Rowe and others asking that the sewer be extended up canyon road some gome feet be granted adopted BRIDGE TO BE BUILT the committee to whom was referred the petition of the brighton dr north point canal company asking that a bridge be built across the canal on fifth south street recommended that the same be granted adopted WILL NOT BE ABANDONED the committee on canals to whom was referred the petition of of J L I 1 neff and others asking that all that portion of the jordan canal north of seventh south street be abandoned and the right of way offered for sale to the abutting property owners recommended that the same be not granted adopted TO 70 ABOLISH THE OFFICE OF DEPUTY TREASURER the following resolution was offered by mr cohn who sid said by way of ex pl pi nation that the office in question had always been a useless and cumbersome appendage to the office of treasurer sod and that its creation was a mistake inasmuch as there had bad never been anything for the incumbent to do resolved that the office of deputy treasurer be abolished and all marlern relating to licenses and other collections for the same be transferred to the office of the city recorder and that there be allowed said office a license clerk at a wary salary of per month being the same as is now allowed the deputy treasurer said license clerk and all matters relating to the license business including the inspection spec tion cLion collection and issuance of licenses etc to be bounder under the supervision and control of the city recorder that the committee on mani municipal cipal laws be instructed to present to this Counci lat its ito next meeting an ordinance covering this resolution by request of mr hall the matter was laid on the table forone for one week AFTER THE university REGENTS the lowine following fol resolution was offered by mr pembroke resolved that the board of deseret university regents be requested by this council to take steps to 10 comply with the conditions upon which the university was ceded to the territory adopted ANOTHER the same gentlemen gentleman then offered the followings following which was also adopted rio grande railway company be instructed to remove within thirty days from sixth west street all tracks laid without authority of the city council AND YET ANOTHER athe the following resolution was almo offered by mr pembroke be it resolved that the street on supervisor per be instructed to place no more gravel upon any street which is within the paving districts this was lost but the vote had no so mer been declared than the same gentleman offered another resolution authorizing the appointment of a c committee nt to confer with the morgan county authorities to devise a plan tor for opening a road through city creek canyon to morgan county this also died for want of a second TO PROCEED AT ONCE councilman parsons submitted the following resolution which was adopt ed be it ordered that the city council hereby determine to proceed with the improvement of laying sidewalks in districts 1 2 4 and 13 and that the work of improvements improve menla be made under the supervision of the board of public works JK TO RECEIVE THE PRESIDENT the following was presented by mayor scott to the city council of salt take lake gentlemen this city will soon be honored by a visit from the president of the united states and that proper recognition of the event be made by the city I 1 request that a committee of five from this council be appointed to arrange for the reception and entertainment of the president and his party with authority to operate cooperate co with the citizens committee and make all necessary arrangements on motion of councilman spafford Spa flord the recommendation was adopted and the mayor authorized to appoint such committee his honor named parsons anderson andersen james noble and pembroke PAVING ORDINA ordinances PASSED the ordinance levying the tax and for we the assessment of property to construct sidewalks on both sides of first south street from east temple to second hast was then taken up and pawed passed the tax is per foot front on property abutting on the street to be benefited by the improvement A similar ordinance levying the tax and for the assessment of property to construct sidewalks on both sides of pint first south street from second east to eighth east streets was passed the tax in this district jb 82 cents per linear foot the ordinance levying the tax and for the assessment of property to construct sidewalks on both sides of second south street from second east to eighth east but was then passed the tax in this district is also 82 cents per front foot A similar ordina ordinance fice for a sidewalk on OB both sides of first south street from east temple to fourth west was then passed the tax 1 in n this district is per front foot PAVING DISTRICT NO 1 councilman parsons introduced an ordinance ar eating paving district no 1 I the boundaries of which are as follows on the north by north temple on the south by third south on the west by west temple on the east by fourth east street the lines are however extended half a block in all directions and cut through the centre of the blocks blacks so as to include both bolh sides of the streets named within the district pawed passed WATER PIPE FOR FOB FIRST EAST STREET on motion of mr anderson the mayor was authorized authorize to purchase 8 inch water pipe for first east street 3 as recommended by the superintendent of waterworks water works mr pembroke only voting in the negative THE SALE OP OF MORE MOIRE BONDS the report of the committee on finance recommending the sale of additional bonds was then taken up mr pembroke objected to the bonds belag being sold within sixty days as he did not think that so much money would be needed within that time mr lynn said that more than the amount mentioned would be needed within the specified time whereupon mr pembroke withdrew his objection mr lynn stated further by way of explanation the amount which will have to be raised comprises the following items sewerage water works fire department laud purchases city and county building sidewalks emigration Emier atlon canyon pipe line capitol hill reservoir cemetery this makes up a total of over the report was adopted RAILWAY FRANCHISE GRANTED the ordinance granting a franchise to the salt lake halley and puget sound bound railway company was then taken up and passed appropriations the following appropriations were made mount griffin no 00 fifteenth ecclesiastical ward 62 90 fifteenth ward relief belief society 26 OC parleys conduit
