Show OBTRUSIVE CONDUCT A liberal rally in connection with the approaching school election was held in the fifteenth ward on july fth its projectors and participants were guilty of conduct of which they ought to be ashamed learning that bishop ellas elias morris was a party arty associated with a difference teat that arose in connection with he meeting he was interviewed on july ath by a representative of the ahe NEWS to whom he made the following plain straightforward statement of the occurrence yesterday afternoon I 1 was informed that the liberal party intended to have a rally at the fifteenth ward meeting house and that a load of kindling wood paper shavings and other materials for a bonfire had been already placed on the he ward property situated about a rod and a half between the meet meetinghouse ng puse and the janitors residence Q apon pon hearing this I 1 at once went and saw the mayor upon the matter telling him that I 1 did not think it a very wise thing to make a bonfire in such a place especially as it was private property I 1 also pointed out that the risk would be doubly great during the present excessively hot weather mayor scott suggested that I 1 should go and speak with the marshal I 1 did so ond and I repeated to him what I 1 had sala said to the mayor marshal young agreed with me that it would be a most unwise proceeding to light a bonfire in the spot contemplated and nd remarked further that the par ties had no right to do so he communicated munica ted therefore with the chairman of the liberal committee stating the views which he had previously expressed to me on the subject I 1 v visited the place shortly before the hour arranged for the commencement 0 the meeting and with the assistance of a few others removed the lumber ings etc to the other side of the ditch when the band arrived accompanied compa nied by several members of tb the liberal eLiberal baity I 1 stated that I 1 and my friends had no desire whatever to intrude upon their proceedings but at the same time pointed out that the promoters promote rd of the affair had no business to make a fire upon private ground thereupon recorder hyams commenced to quibble with me and said paid it was very small business for me to go and consult the mayor upon I 1 replied to this observation by asking hirn him to whom I 1 should go if not to the mayor or marshal in the event of protection to property being required q aired furthermore I 1 assured him that I 1 had not come there to quarrel or dispute with anyone that all I 1 wished was a fair and clear understanding upon the matter and that having thus remonstrated they could now go ahead with their meeting the materials for the bonfire having been cleared off I 1 walked away but I 1 have since learned that abuse was pretty freely heaped upon me after I 1 left I 1 may state that when I 1 welted upon the mayor and marshal both gentlemen treated me with every courtesy and after hearing what I 1 had bad to say told me that they had already received a similar complaint from another source |
