Show FIELD headquarters FOR FOREST SERVICE in order to am and lender more inore effective arid and economical the lie work of administer administering ing the national forests field headquarters are to be established by tile the foiest service in ill the west and the clerical force needed to complete the organization will be mainly joawn front from the force now employed in the washington office the change will take place not later than january 1 1909 and will probably pio bably begin by october 1st ast of the present e ear a r 1 at the present national forests are arc grouped under six districts with headquarters as follows district 1 hiis missoula mantana no 2 denver colo no 3 albuquerque new mexico no 1 salt lake city utah no or 5 san francisco cal and no 6 portland oregon the headquarters will remain unchanged under tinder the new plan of administration each district will be in charge of an assistant forester who will deal directly with the supervisor er isor of 0 forests of his bisti distinct let only questions of special importance will be submitted to the washington office for action in this way the regular business of the forests will be much expedited while the men who have charge of the business will be in almost constant touch with the users of the forests the men to take charge of the several districts have not as yet been selected but they will be chosen from those in in the regular service force who have had most experience peri ence in the work on the national forests the growth of business on oil national forests resulting front from the use of their resources by the public has been steady and rapid lapid ever since the policy of wide use supplanted the policy of restricted use at the time when the management of 0 the national fo forests sel was placed under the r orest forest service one of the big problems of administration ministration nd has been to get into close touch with the of the national lo forests rests and this has alicade been partially solved by various ex such as delegating to local i forest officers the authority to tra transact ns a large part of the national forest business in this way the public and the gerilee sen ice have been constantly constan brought closer together A second step in the same sama direction was the recent transfer of headquarters tor for supplies from washington D C to ogden utah A third step was the placing of a branch of the office of engineering which has charge of permanent improvements on tile the forests also at ogden which is centrally located the contemplated change is therefore mere merely the tha completion of oc a plan which has already been partially worked out probably one third of the clerical force now in washington mainly stenographers and typewriters w will ill go west to complete the organization required in each field district it is expected that a sufficient number of clerks in the washington office will desire assignments to 10 tile field headquarters so that it will not be necessary to send to the field those who do not wish to go ard and no new appointments point ments will be necessary in making selections tor for the new posts the individual preferences of the clerks N ill be consulted so far as the ivnik permits the change will not affect the lie form of organization of the forest service in washington the offices will be retained as at present but with a smaller force all of the investigative work done by the tha service except that directly connected with tile the administration of the he national rol molests ests will ill continue to be directed filin washington |
