last evening in the chamber hall with about I 1 fai fifty ty members present and president lawi I 1 rence in the chair after a reading of the minutes of a year previous and the defeat of an attempt at a roll call as impracticable B R H terhune was elected assistant secretary pro WN tern and president lawrence read his bis annual report as follows the presidents report SALT LAKE crry UTAH january eth 1890 gentlemen Gent kmen af V the salt lake chamber of commerce we close the third year of our organization under the most favorable circumstances the prospects for the future of the chamber and the city are very encouraging increased Iner essed activity has been witnessed in alf branches of industry during the year IM 1889 not only have bave the values in real property steadily advanced but the volume of all kinds of business has increased to toa a degree unparalleled in any single year of our cites history the profits on invested capital have been satisfactory and the outlook for the coming year Is fillol full ot promise for forthe the inauguration of many business enterprises new capital will be placed in our mines mine sand and manufactories manu factories large business houses will be erected fine residences with modern conveniences will take the place of the old adobe houses the sewera gas and water mains extended into new districts the city railway service enlarged and improved the streets and sidewalks and the city generally will take on a more aspect in addition to this there will be increased railroad constructs n leading to our city and extending throughout the territory in the promotion and advancement of these local improvements and general enterprises the chamber Is fa entitled to no small share of credit it has always created an influence at home in favor of advanced methods and newer ideas and it has persistently placed before the country the advantages and resources of our city and territory tor for the profitable investment of ir capital andoor and our unequaled climate as a of residence during the year a special effort was made by your board of directors to secure a building lor the chamber of Com commerce meros in this they weep partly successful sTal as will be seen keen by reference to the secreta report in the course of a few years the chamber will be able to come into possession of a g on very easy terms that will be a credit to toe chamber and an ornament t to the city the membership of the chamber Is nominally about while the actual number ot of paying members Is about some members member who hold bold certificates neglect to pay their annual dues while others have retired from business or lett let the city during the year a number of certificates have been surrendered to the chamber and seven new members have been enrolled at the of the year annual dues were largely delinquent and the board of directors found 1 li necessary to provide for the current expenses by individual subscriptions this temporary plan answered the purpose but it ought not to be followed as a 86 precedent the annual expenses expense a of the chamber will be about and we ought to be able to rely on the prompt payment or dues by members instead of re sorting to the uncertainty of subscriptions no doubt by a special effort of the incoming administration the tb membership can be largely increased from our new dow citizens during the year a number of special committees have done effective work in the duties assigned asel gued them our standing committees might be mide a very valuable adjunct of the chamber it if they would take a more active interest in their respective departments much valuable Inform aMon won and useful suggestions might be made by these committeemen and I 1 trust that the new committees when ar appointed anted will manifest a renewed interest in r this his branch of the work we have during the past year lost by death three of our esteemed and respected members frank foote james B glass glans and francis cope they will long be remembered in the business and social circles of this community during the year the exhibits of the products of the territory bave received valuable additions especially in the mineral department these exhibits have proved attractive alike to strangers and residents of this city they should be greatly enlarged in variety and volume when the new building to is occupied meanwhile the attention of the manufacturer the farmer the miner and the pr dubers generally in this territory should be c antly called to the fact that there is no more effective method of advertising than the placing of ea am m ples pies in the show oases of the chamber D during the year the board of directors has held the re regular and many special meetings in the discharge of their duties they have liven given a patient hearing to every feasible proposition tor for the promotion of the 0 objects e of chamber they joined the U utah ore producers Asse clation in its lt sorts efforts to have the duty collected on imported lead ores and to have silver restored to its old and rightful place they expended a goodly portion of the years revenue of the ike chamber in direct ad v in pamphlets newspapers and by special a nv agents t setting retting forth rth the attractions and resources of our city and territory and they have made liberal donations in the interests ests of the general good our hall ball has been thrown open for meetings for various lublic i purposes the Cham her ber took a leading part and operated cooperated co with the elti citizens zens of salt lake city in the generous relief measures made necessary essry by the and fires east and west the board of directors has worked faithfully and used its influence tor for the erection of a union passenger railway ballway station in this ibis city and a federal government building and I 1 am informed that the latter which Is to cost to Is now almost a certainty our banking interests have greatly increased during the year iwo 1 wo new bunks banks were established with an aggregate capital of 0 the bank deposits in this city now agg aggregate re t e about and the total banking caad capital t a 1 and surplus to Is near 2 A clearing house would be a great convenience to our banks and the expense of maintaining it being divided between them the cost to each bank would be trifling wevvy weekly reports of our clearing house would be sought after and be the means of advertising salt bait lake city as a great business center A territorial bureau of statistics and immigration is very much needed Wit without holit it the various boards of trade labor under great disadvantages in obtaining detailed and clust fled information as to the various departments of our cly and territory and it is to be how hoped that our legislature about to convene in this city will not finally adjourn without passing a law establishing such a bureau the financial affairs of tha chamber are in a satisfactory condition as you will perceive from the reports of the secretary and treasurer in conclusion permit me to state that the salt lak chamber of commerce to Is composed of a majority of the most conservative as well as the most progressive business men in our city while they are striving to build up their individual interests they are universally sany governed 0 by a strong fraternal spirit in wor working alv ni for the general good ard and in using their influence to attract new capital and encourage fresh enterprises in the development of our boundless resources itne i i the chamber was organized it b has as taken the lead in many important matters affecting the welfare and progress of the city and such a body Is desera ing of the support and encouragement of every enterprising citizen I 1 thank you gentlemen for the trust reposed in me as your executive during the past pant year and in retiring from my official position I 1 shall as a member continue to labor tor for the worthy objects of the organization and the best beat interests of our city EL w president secretary hollister read the treasurers treasur ers report and a financial report of his bis own subscriptions and incorporate a railroad company to build aline connecting salt lake and los angeles this committee wrought faithfully at their work during the earlier months of the year but their efforts not meeting the response from our wealthier citizens which they deserved erased cased with the advance of spring pring Nevet nevertheless beless railroad movements movements of importance to this city have been originated and partly consummated during the past year all the ut rutih th lines in operation or contemplation of the D IL ft G western have been consolidated denver dropped from the title and headquarters of the new consolidated utah company fixed at salt lake at the same time the line from ogden to grand junction has been broad gauged and splendidly equipped the D B R Q G Is under going the fame process the gap between grani junction and rifle ere creek ek Is being filled by a union line it Is understood that the D B R G the colorado midland and other eastern roads will thus be given access to this valley and city following upon this rebuilding of its main line the rio blo grande grand western will construct branches to vartoui eligible points in utah and an 1 extensions toward the coast all of the intermountain lines of the union pacific have been consolidated as the oregon short line utah northern with headquarters he 1 a aguar at talt aalt lake and enough mone money y raised in the operation to axtt nd the utah division to nevada miles and to broad gauge the idaho division from ogden to mccammon junction it ic Is expected that the western shops of the union pacific will be located at salt lake all the lines of the union pacific are now merged mer ed for operating pir poses all south of saden ogden Is the union pacific utah division the company has examined central nevada and intimations were thrown out last spring that one of the stubs pointing in that direction soon be extended into nevada via deep creek but all has quieted down in that region and it Is plain that the idea if ever entertained has been abandoned or indefinitely postponed A railroad into nevada via deep creek Is of more importance to salt lake than any other because it pill make this city the commercial capital of that great mining state aj ai it already alread Is of utah many of 0 r citizens and the chamber of commerce especially rave for three years sought to secure the construction of such a road the effort ought not dot to be abandoned if the road was regarded as lu indispensable dispensable in IM 1887 and in INS 1888 and in how much more indispensable it Is now need opt be pointed out since 1887 this town had ha men been roused from the torpor of death it Is alive now in every ni nive n ive i ve and fiber and g od jod generalship dictates that we take advantage of the present electrical moment to grasp every means to extend the sway away of the city to broaden the basis of its growth and prosperity our present auspicious condition was drought brought about by faith and courage and all that Is h needed to realize its most mort sanguine promise to is the everel e of the same qualities without he citation or reserve perhaps the speediest ediest way to secure this railroad now is to back up the wyoming salt lake california a company organized here early the past year to build across utah from evanston Ev antton wyo to deep creek nev passing directly through this city this enterprise ven rise has been slowly struggling to its feet men competent to carry it out stand ready to commence and complete it in a year but ask our citizens to exhibit thea confidence in it by takli g of the thousand dollar bonds of the company at par such a subscription should be filled in this town in one dy it it be again asked by the em company pany the construction of this line into nevada whether it be pushed through tb tough to the coast or not would render tributary to this city a lar large area of the best beat mining ground in the uni united states it would probably cause our smelting smelling sm elting plant to be doubled in capacity it would make a market for our coal and for all things we f may have to sell and without much doubt it would result in the central pacific changing its line from the north to the south of great salt lake A considerable mileage would thereby be saved and a mileage expensive expansive to operate on account of high grades mr john W youngs salt lake ft fort douglas road runn iniz from the city to fort douglas and the neighboring cat canons ions his salt lake eastern track laid froth from sugar house via parleys cation callon to park city and utah western under construction to beach on great salt lake have materialized during the past year and just in time to transport the building materials now in such unwonted demand and in which the country traversed by these roads abounds A new line from the east bast known as the pacific short line began construction from sioux city west in 1889 and now bids fair to begin construction from this end and possibly at two or more intermediate points with the 0 opening n ng 0 of spring the truffle traffic ail alllan lancA cn recently antly consummated urinated ted between the union pacific and northwestern may safely be regarded as strengthening the position and standing ot of this new road and there need be no doubt 1 I think that the pacific short line will be speedily completed the utah U tah navada california Is a child of the put past year what the full plans and pur p ses of its projectors are to Is not given out its immediate intention Is to commence construction st at provo and run south on the best beat attainable route passing lr in the neighborhood of the southern coal and iron and thence on to southern california its charter begins on the colorado border near grand junction and the presumption Is that it will ultimately build mgt east to that point and there connect with some eastern system
