| Show SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION there was a fair attendance of officers and teachers at the sunday school union meeting held last evening april 14 at the fourteenth ward assembly room there were representatives present from most of the city sabbath school wad and from the following tol lowing named mountey schools taylorsville Taylors ville and farmers farmere ward stake supt bupt john C cutler autler presided supt bupt T V williams ot of the twelfth ward school opened the meeting g with prayer A very excellent recitative exercise was presented on the subject of the universal christian apostasy and the restoration of the gospel to the prophet joseph smi h oll by sister ansle ansie claw class from the twelfth ward school the secretary read the statistical report of the sunday schools of the suit salt lake stake for 1889 as follows no yf sunday schools in stake 48 total number nu aber officers aud and teachers 1022 average attendance of officers and teachers number of pupils male female total average attendance of pupils enrolled or about 60 per cent total of officers teachers and pupils no of latter day saint children in this stake between the ages of 6 and 18 no of theological classes re ported 87 intermediate classes primary 88 total classes nu no of pupils using leaflets increase of enrollment of pupils over previous year increase average at atte the increase of enrollment and of average alten alien lauce lance was the more noteworthy from the fact that in the three previous years there had been no increase rhe fhe attendance of latter day saint children was under 50 per cent of the number of such burr ch children dren in the stake the exact percentage could not be deduced from the above figures as many of the pupils enrolled in the sabbath schools were under 6 abid over IS 18 years of age work aud and win an inspiring hymn wail wac sung by the twelfth ward choir elder frank Y taylor of the sunday school missionary corps next aa addressed dressed the meeting the subject that presented itself most forcibly to his bis mind he said was the training sabbath school teachers should impart to their pupils during the week teachers could accomplish much more lasting good if they would occasionally visit their pupils at their homes enquire as to the company they keep the books they read and direct their choice of companions to those whose company would be elevating in the choice of li literature tera ture a teacher had a very good opportunity to offer suggestions that would direct the reading of their pupils into channels of usefulness and profit the speaker was earnest in urging the tee worthiness of the juvenile I 1 n tor lor of patronage and support from all sunday school pupils and teachers abst general supt bupt john jahn morgan was the next speaker he regretted that there were not more officers and teachers present at this meeting as the sunday school union was organized specially to stir up the superintendents and teachers to greater diligence and efficiency he but wished that the officers and teachers of the sabbath schools manifested as great an interest in the cause as the children themselves them did sixty per cent of the children enrolled in the schools of this stake were in regular attendance but the attendance at these union meetings of the officers and teachers was very far short of so good a percentage teachers Teacher and sand off luers rs should use every means possible to kov kerp alive in the work themselves als aud labor earnestly to preserve the faith of the fathers in the hearts of the children and work diligently to have every one of their pupils anchored in the truth As compared with ith the work of the faithful earnest sabbath school tf acher the results of the labors of many elders abroad paled into insignificance assistant general superintendent george goddard God durd followed d with a few afew excellent instructions which were well appreciated for their encouraging tenor gerior assistant superintendent D B R lyon announced that at the may union the thirteenth ward sunday sunda school would furnish the singing exercises and part f the pro gramme the choir very beautifully fang an anthem and the benediction was wag pronounced by superintendent archibald frame of taylorsville Taylors ville joszt JOSEPH n hyrum PARRY see sec |
