have hate to say y about eight or nine months ago harrington Har ringlon asked me to snake an effort to procure a pardon for him I 1 told thid him that I 1 would do so but must pay me to cover coer expenses in working on the ease came he agreed to write to friends in colorado to procure the amount and I 1 immediately entered upon the work of getting recommendations from jurors who tried the ease case when he was as convicted many of whom I 1 went to see personally getting petitions from colorado etc I 1 made one or two trips to ogden 0 den and elsewhere in hla his beef behalf about abma two months ago I 1 received a letter from harrington or some one on his behalf saying the had bad been received and had been placed in the hands of the warden and would be paid to me when the work was completed I 1 paid little attention to this and if I 1 made any reply I 1 do not remember what it was it was the degni definite understanding all along however between harrington and Q myself that this money was to be e pap to me for expenses and in any e event ent I 1 saw harrington today and ana he admitted this to be the ease case and paid the money to me neither mr thurman nor I 1 is to receive anything whatever contingent upon the pardon 1 I 1 refer you to mr pratt pat warden of the pen illen trusting the foregoing wall be sufficient by way of explanation I 1 am very truly yours thus far fai the governor has taken no action in n the matter the ex a of mr sutherland dj dispense pen W with ith the idea that a pardon can be bought though the sum nap napped pea is too small aman to even sug gesuch a proceeding but thin there arts are other considerations some of or them vietri of a grave grae nature connected ne eted with the circumstances the lunching lynching lyn ching which require that a careful investigation be made as aa to 6 whether the ends of justice jwuc baa d been served to an extent to punish harrington for the part cart he be took in the affair and to have an effect in others similarly inclined from endeavoring to wreak suin summary vengeance upon offenders the governor will doubtless give all these matters proper consideration before he reaches a conclusion |
