Show a 10 TJ S sunday services religious services were held in the tabernacle salt lake city march 10 1880 1889 commencing at 2 p in president angus M cannon presiding the choir and congregation sang 0 jesus jeans the giver of all we enjoy prayer was offered by elder wm eddington the choir sang again we meet around the board of jesus our oar redeeming lord PRESIDENT ANGUS M CANNON said my brethren sisters and friends I 1 regret the necessity for for my rising on this occasion to make an explanation for some time past we have been subject to the annoyance of persons conversing in this house during divine service and otherwise conducting themselves in an unbecoming manner in the house of god in numbers of instances persons will arise from their seats and leave the building thereby producing a confusion in this house that is very annoying to those who have assembled together for the purpose of worshiping god under these circumstances notices have bee been n posted ted upon n the doors and in the g grounds adjacent to this house but notwithstanding these notices have been ao 80 posted we are still subject to this annoyance it has been my lot to travel quite extensively and in no portion of the earth where I 1 have traveled or sojourner sojourned ed ei in and entered houses of worship have I 1 ever witnessed the unbecoming conduct that I 1 have observed on the part of persons persona who visit here where we assemble men and women ladies and gentlemen apparently well educated people who are not unfamiliar with the rules that govern religious bodies in other port portions ious of the earth will enter this building and behave themselves in such a manner that those who assemble together to worship are annoyed and d disgusted with their conduct I 1 think this is the first time since I 1 have been associated with this people that we have i found it necessary to administer this thi s rebuke and to adopt means for the checking of an an boyance that we cannot restrain 4 in any other way the acoustic properties of this hall are very good so much so that the least noise promotes confusion in every part OF of the house or drowns the sound of the speakers voice under these cincu circumstances ms I 1 trust that every person who has a proper sense of right and wrong will make every allowance for the rule we are about to adopt and govern overn themselves accordingly arother brother joseph C kingsbury has charge of the ushers and doorkeepers or of this house and I 1 have made a request of him to station doorkeepers at the doors and prohibit the exit of all persons from this N building until the conclusion of our services and I 1 ask our city police to assist him in maintaining order in this building after these doors doors are closed you the doorkeepers will AA close the doors in five minutes from froin now against all persons leaving 14 11 this building until the conclusion of our services which will not continue beyond four this afternoon we will now gat give ve the opportunity anity or all who feel mat they cannot remain during our services to withdraw and we will suspend our proceedings ce for five minute which i the doorkeepers are requested to close the doors against all persons IT A seeking to make an exit at this point quite a number of persons most of them stran strangers gers to our city took their leave during the whole of the remainder of the services the best of order prevailed the priesthood of the second ward officiated in the administration A ka 1 of the sacrament ELDER JAMES E TALMAGE was called to address the congregation he said he undertook in all humility to speak to the saints 4 trusting that tae he would be the instrument A ment in the bands of the almighty of saying something for the good of those who had assembled to worship god we were so constituted that our mortal bodies cannot exist without food for sustenance spiritual food is also just as necessary for the sustenance of the sal saints ants the lord has promised that where even a few are met together in his name he will bless them inelder an elder who is called to speak should be humble that he may bear the spirit of god and be able to give instruction wn from the source of all light and wisdom the saints should also have nave that spirit that they might recognize whether a speaker is expressing his own ideas or is follow flag mg the dictates of the holy spirit the he sheep know the voice of their shepherd and the latter day saints should always be able to distinguish between those who speak by the power of god and those who speak DY 7 common wisdom those who talk alk to us under the inspiration of the spirit are not those who always speak according to the human rules or of eloquence but they have that eloquence which goes to the heart of elf those who are honest it was that roat spirit that enabled peter to peak so that every nation heard him in their own tongue those who were ready to receive the truth knew the meaning of the words ol of the he apostles Apostle sand and inquired what they should do to be saved there were others who listened to the same words yet who accused the apostles of having been drunk they were informed to the contrary still many of them did not receive the testimony which became to them a condemnation because they rejected tt it when an elder of israel s speaks by y the spirit there is a relationship between him bini and those who listen to his words we are surrounded in our daily lives with evil which seems to be mingled with good in all conditions of this life virtue and vice ap appear w go hand baud in hand for the great m t ay of separation has not ve been en ushered bredin in in the parable the lord said d the tares and the wheat must grow together but in the day of hart bart harvest barvest vest they should be separated ani the tares will be burned today the honest man lives next door to the he knave the unselfish man by the unselfish one the lord has said that it is difficult alt to find a man without sin and though man is surrounded by conditions that tend to lead him astray the lord has provided a way for the remission emission of the sins of those who sincerely receive the law upon which that action is based it is to our interest to inquire under what conditions we can receive a forgiveness of sins and we should seek to know ow the lord that we may receive the e benefit of those conditions todo to do t this a man n must confess his sins before the lord in au all humility in accordance with the great law of justice those who desire forgiveness must forgive those who trespass ainest gai nat them the prayer of the lord ord was father forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those OBO who trespass against us those chobe who seek this boon must also keep in mind the great atonement and must ask for what they desire elire in the name of jesus there are re none of us who do not need forgiveness let us forgive those who have trespassed against us and comini coming before the lord in hamili ty t y in jesus esus name we will not be cast aside if I 1 a 9 man will not forgive his neighbor in that man lies the greater sin bin if one desires to make amends and receive forgiveness for his wrongs that man who will not grant such a request is in condemnation dem nation none can climb in an any other way than by complying with these principles forgiveness cannot be purchased by money salvation cannot be secured with gold but the rich and the poor alike can receive by conforming to the law of god repentance is a gift from the almighty we should supplicate for this gift for the man who can repent earnestly and sincerely is on the way to receive a remission of his sins in the days of elisha a little maiden who had been carried captive by naaman who was afflicted and had not been able to be cured told of the prophet who rebuked disease naaman availed himself of this information and came to ellsha expecting the latter to receive him as became a man in his exalted earthly position but ellsha elisha sent his servant to tell naaman to go and wash seven times in jordan naaman was insulted and thought the rivers of his own land were good enough finally he was prevailed upon to do as he was ordered and when he had washed himself the seventh time he was made whole I 1 sometimes think there are some of us who are in the same condition of heart as was naaman n when he was angry at the prophet the powers that were exercised anciently I 1 are with the elders today ay but akey they can only be used by obedience to the principles of righteousness only those who repent can receive forgiveness A profane writer dante describes what he says were the spirits in prison who had rejected the law of repentance under this condition they were tormented and their great punishment was that they could see what they might have gained and thus suffered the anguish aish of remorse dante further described described another class clam who had repented but who were being punished for what they had done this class received their pun punishment ishmen joyfully knowing that their debts were being paid and that the they literately tely would ultimately be libera liberated still another class he speaks of those who stood clean and redeemed who had atoned for their sins there may be among us those who by sinning do not reco recognize 1 sin whose sensitiveness is destroyed by wrongdoing wrong doing and who are going toward the condition of deepest condemnation through being accustomed to sin bin they do not look leok upon it with aversion we should recognize this principle that practice makes perfection and if we continue in wrong our sensibilities become blunted the warfare between right and wrong never waged more fiercely than it does today the conflict was never hotter than in this age As saints sainte we have been gathered here that we may obey the lord with less restraint than if we were scattered in the world but temptations are in our midst we are am of ourselves weak and as one of the apostles said last sabbath from a human standpoint there is no ho hope e for us but he also testified that ye the righteous would be made triumphant b by ahat th the e power of the great jehovah that testimony makes its influence felt in the hearts of the latter day saints itis it is nothing new to seethe see the saints of god beset by enemies we gathered here to serve our father that is no secret our enemies know that is our profession when I 1 see gee the clouds of the coming storm the red sea of trouble before and the hosts of pharaoh behind when I 1 see these I 1 ask cannot the lord as well raise up a moses now as he did then v his Is arm is as powerful now as it was when israel was in the deserts of arabia the lord does not operate by great armies when gideon gide on went out jehovah would not let him take a great force against the Midia this was that his power might be made manifest was the victory lefo leas complete than if there had been a greater number verily no the Midia red fled because they knew the injustice of their cause the saints today ay know that their cause is just that they are following the great jehovah who has declared that this work shall not be overthrown the lord has powers that we know riot not of man uses the powers of electricity for instance bu the knows not what it is shall man in his ignorance say that god has not still other powers nay for he can make the thunderbolt serve him and even man in his wrath to praise him did not the flower of this nation as army come hereto here to destroy the saints thirty years ears ago and did they not I 1 instead CT prove rove a blessing to gods people we we are not bigoted when we say that though the whole world fight against us he will turn their wrath to his praise the hosts of heaven are with those who serve god when the syrian hosts surrounded the little town where elisha was and they came to take him taunting tau him the prophet of god called bre from heaven to destroy the captain and fifty who were sent to take him a second time a captain and fitly fifty came and they were destroyed in like manner the third captain entreated the pro prophet het to come down and he did so Ulis eliphas Elis has hals servant was shown how it was done his eyes were opened and he saw the hills covered with the hosts of heaven the syrian hosts were stricken blin dand the prophet led his people into samaria and from there they were delivered by V divine assistance istance am I 1 do not think there is any cause for us to despair today has the lord lost his strength no it is those who do not trust in him who have lost their faith let us seek to do the will of god that we may have confidence in him let us be pure and our enemies cannot overcome us for jehovah has so declared li let us exercise charity toward our enemies and remember that vengeance is the lords let us so live that when we are spoken evil of it will be falsely and that mon men wing seeing our good works will glorify our father in heaven if this is our condition all will be well with us and no power can prevail against us the choir sang behold the mount monni of olives rend I 1 and on its ita top messiah stand APOSTLE JOHN W TAYLOR was called nand said that he had listened attentively to elder tal mages remarks and could bear testimony to their truth he very much regretted the necessity of president cannon having to call attention to the annoyance the saints had been subjected to by those who disturbed the meeting during divine service but the condition had become such that his course could not be well avoided excursionists come here and after remaining in the tabernacle a few minutes go out of the building in large numbers this has occurred sabbath after sabbath I 1 was reared a mormon and was taught that no gentleman or lady whether latter day saint or latter day sinner would so disturb divine service as to get u up lut in the midst of it and go out but ati strangers angers come here as they do to a museum and others take license by it strangers consider our worship a new thing so did the jews consider the teachings and actions of jews jesus and his disciples a new thing he instituted the sacrament among his disciples and we administer it because we have been commanded to by him we believe in ill the doctrines of the bible in faith repentance baptism for the remission of sins and the laying on of hands for the gift of the holy ghost this latter principle is considered by many in this thi 1 s age to be new when the people of samaria were baptized peter and john were sent down and laid hands upon the samaritans samaritana Samar itans for the gift of the holy H ly ghost which the people received recelle and they in tongues and Q prophesied on another occasion paul came to some who had been baptized by somebody he was told by the people that they had not heard of the holy ghost paul told them the true doctrine which thed they received and were a again ain baptized a iz e then paul laid his hands u upon n them and they recel received ed t the e holy oly ghost paul also exhorted timothy almoth to neglect not the gift that he received by the laying on of hands and by prophesy christ was called a wine bibber and a glutton he was accused of casting out devils by beelzebub the prince of devils john the baptist was put to death because he fasted christ because he ate and drank peter and paul on one occasion were referred to as being of adeo a people who were everywhere spoken 0 1 k e n evil about the latter day la saints 1 n t a are of the same class clam and abd have avo no principles contrary to the teachings of christ there are many not of us who say they desire to return to the bosom of abraham yet when we practice the principles which abraham practiced prat iced they cry crucify them crucify trample them down to the dust I 1 want to say of the he book of mormon that it is a history of the aborigines of america the doctrine and covenants contains the revelations of christ |
