Show PACE 5 Thursday, October pv J 16, 2014 CNN recently posted a controversial op-e- d on their website, written by a woman who decided to take out a prescription for doctor-assiste- d suicide medication. Brittany Maynards decision came after finding out she has inoperable brain tumors and a prognosis of about six months to live. Maynards story brings up a touchy subject; doctor-assiste- d suicide. Death with dignity laws have only been passed in five states in the country and they continue to be highly-debate- d in legislatures across the U.S. At the University Journal Editorial Board, we believe death With dignity should be an option in all states, but it is a choice that should not be taken lightly. We respect Maynards right to die on her own terms. Its something she has obviously thought through and has discussed with her close friends and family. Its also not a rash decision she just made; Oregons laws require a lengthy process for acquiring the medication for doctor-assiste- d suicide, giving people plenty of time to think through their decision. These regulations are a vital part of any death with dignity laws that might be passed. Death with dignity should be a last resort for those with t r EDITOR Haley Jensen, 586-548- 8 ld ZAK MITCHELL Scott Wyatt revitalises general education General education; the bane of college existence, the thorn in the rose that is undergraduate school. As a college senior, 1 have attended multiple universities and have seen many approaches to generals, but never one as innovative as the approach SUU President Scott L. Wyatt plans to institute on our campus next fall. Ten years ago, I was a freshman college student enrolled in general education classes. I had no idea what I wanted to do in life and was tired of the monotony of general education. I needed excitement and inspiration, instead I got English and biology. This is not to discredit the English department or the scientific disciplines in any way. As a journalist, I know first hand the importance of writing and grammatical skills, and the relevance of science in our world. However, as a young college freshman these things did not rank high on my priorities list. They did not fill the need for inspiration and they did not offer the experience I needed to find out what I wanted to do in life. In fact, the load of mundane general education classes that semester did quite the al terminal diseases. For Maynard, her brain tumor would cause unbearable pain, as well as personality changes; she would not even be the same person. Rather than put her family through that, she has decided to make her own decision and say her goodbyes to her loved ones now rather than putting herself and the people she cares about through that. However, those of us at the editorial board feel that in many cases, the opportunity to spend as much time as possible with their friends and families is more important to terminally ill patients. Then there are those who would rather hold out hope for a miracle. We are not discrediting these choices in anyway; we just feel the opposite choice should also be available. In the end, no one can really say what is right or wrong for everyone in a situation like this. For some, their right to die on their own terms makes the difference for them, while others feel the extra time with their families and friends is worth the pain theyd have to go through. Either way, it is a decision that needs to be made carefully, but one that everyone dealing with a terminal disease should have. The opinions expressed above are the collective perspective of the University Journal Editorial Board. The Editorial Board meets Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. in room 176C of the Sharwan Smith Student Center. Readers are welcome to comment online at suunews.com. Last week j had the di;tinct peasure 0f jpgng with president Wyatt on KSUU Thunder 91.1s Morning Brew. Knowing his ideas about combining the general education into one 33 credit class, I asked him how he felt it could be implemented. His response left a stunning impression on me and reaffirmed in my mind that his vision for SLUJ is on the cutting edge. Imagine that you are talking about the buildup to the Civil War, and what is going on in the Lincoln White House during that time. Your historical aspect is talking about that, at the same tune your literature faculty member says Were reading Uncle Toms Cabin, so make sure you keep up there. Then the political science faculty member says that At that time it was taught ana believed that blacks were inferior to whites and this is where your biology faculty member comes in and demonstrates how that is not true, and this is why.
