TWITCHELL atwitchellsuunews.com KIERSTEN BENSON UNIVERSITY The economic current country's situation has sent financial shock-wave- s from coast to coast and has left many Americans without work and effective means of the workforce. The fairly gloomy unemployment report released in July by the U.S. Department of Labor painted a picture Americans are now quite familiar with; wage growth is slow, job growth is slower and the education system is in crisis. These three issues are the current hot topics in Washington and seem to be on the minds of most politicians, the president included. In a backyard meeting in an Ohio JOURNAL Austin Bakenstam, a freshman integrated engineering major from Logandale, Nev., scrns the work study jobs posted outside the ACDC. nrrriVhtL) neighborhood on Wednesday, President Barack Obama reassured Americans that the United States is moving in the right direction, but also stressed the need for patience and compared economic recovery to recovering from an illness; you get a little stronger each day... and thats where our economys at right now. Obama stated that the future of the U.S. economy and the ability of its workers to compete in a highly competitive global job market are dependent upon the success of the countrys education system from elementary and secondary education, to higher education at universities, as well as reform efforts benefiting all three. At a press conference on Tuesday, SUU President Michael T. Benson 2 acknowledged the necessity of education reform, saying that the very universitys administrators are much ... aw'are of reforms trying to be implemented in the state and to be supportive... were very interested in what goes on in terms of refoi m nationally and at the state level. Unfortunately the ongoing battle to 2 education isnt the only reform roadblock to the future success of America's workforce and its students. July's unemployment report stated that the number of people out of work has remained at a steady 9.5 percent for several months. As more individuals struggle to find gainful employment, the number of high school graduates who can afford a college education declines.
