Tests done this year have reported no adult mussels in Utah Lakes Dalton said. Quagga and Zebra mussels rapid reproduction rate results in easy littering of beaches, shorelines, and bottoms of lakes with their razor-shar- p shells, Dalton said. Recreationalists are forced to wear footwear at all times in these conditions, according to the DWR website. The mussels release a putrid smell that clings to the air and water making lake conditions unfavorable for summer recreational conditions, according to the website. Recreational equipment is also at high risk of damage according to the DWR. Dalton said the quagga and zebra mussels attach themselves to boating equipment which then causes boat motors to seize up, overheat, and plug up water circulation systems. Boats that come in contact with the quagga or zebra mussel that are not properly cleaned will result in damaged equipment requiring additional maintenance or replacement Dalton said. Dalton he said suggests frequent boaters use professional decontamination services offered by FOR THE JOURNAL The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is warning boaters to beware of quagga and zebra mussels, which could threaten lake quality of life. According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website, quagga and zebra mussels are small, clam-lik- e creatures that reproduce rapidly and deplete nutrients in the water. They can jeopardize power and water infrastructures, damage ecosystems and destroy recreation, according to the site. Larry Dalton, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, said the mussels are almost identical and DNA tests are done to distinguish the two from one another. If Utah lakes become infested with quagga and zebra mussels many favorite recreation areas would suffer as well, Dalton said. There have only been two reports of quagga and zebra mussels in Utah Lakes. Dalton said in 2008 Utah found microscopic young of the zebra mussel in Electric Lake and microscopic young of the quagga mussel in Red Creek nr 'I x ) Y Enoch, H I V i 4 I 84721 Office Hours: 1 j h 4 J) ij v nn . ! ; J Gmdi this story, I justice. ' According to the DWR website, these mussels were first established on the east coast around the Great Lakes area and have spread to the west over the past 30 years. Dalton said most contamination occurs when boaters do not properly decontaminate their boats after exiting infected waters. To properly decontaminate boats after exiting the water, Dalton said boaters should make sure all parts of the boat are cleaned - leaving no plant life, tanks are emptied, and it is dried. In the summer months boats must be dried for seven days before Utah Lakes. Not only recreational equipment is foreseeing damages, but also Utahs power and water infrastructures, according to the DWR. Infestations of quagga mussels could clog the water intake pipes used to transport both drinking and irrigation water, according to the Utah Wildlife Resource website. According to the site, the hydroelectric power plant would be greatly affected as well; causing additional maintenance. - Office (435) Mon-Su- n ! j ; L.J q O' 14 Storage Mon-S- Access Hours: 5 ; .j Us c-- UT J mr SI Self 3871 N.
