JUSTINE PRUITT jpruittsuujournal com Semor Justm Allen finished the basketball season and leceived the confeience awaid basketball Defender of the Year, btlore he broke the school record in the high jump in his fiist meet of the outdooi tiack and field season Former SUU mens basketball coach Bill Evans said Allen was the best defender on the team and dcseived the award Hes probably the best player down the stretch, Evans said His ability to defend helped win and was a key in the way we played Allen said the award was good for the team because it will allow people to look at SUU a little more and the school will get more respect in the league It means a lot to the team and the school, especially finishing the way we did, he said Allen guarded some of the best playeis of the conference and held them to low sconng, Evans said In the Mid Continent game against IUPUI, Allen guarded Jaguar sophomore guard Gary Patterson m the first half and held lum to only three points, then guaided junior guard Austin Montgomery m the second half and held him to only three points He vr as very deserving of the award, Evans said He played more consistently than any other player Im proud of him and appreciate his loyalty Junior forward Semor Abrahao agreed Allen deserved the award He has talent and is always defense, willing to play Hes always Abrahao said willing to play hard Allen was a huge part of the team, Abrahao said He was definitely why we won some of our games, and not just because he made good shots at the end of games, Abrahao said It was his defense some overcame Allen difficulties while he played as a Abrahao said Justins always been a great defender, but he did get better while being (at SUU), he said He got better offensively as well He got tougher Allen said the award meant a lot to him as an individual means teamwork The without lot because a help and (my teammates) I wouldnt communication, be able to (get that award), he said The outdoor track and field See ALLEN, Page 7 |
