Show U N V R i T lOURNAL PACE Thursday, ) 5 March 30, 2006 n r Ki L L L ' i . PV t EDITORS Rachel Glidden, L L Student input vital to select new president While we are thankful for President Steven D. Bennions service at SUU, we recognize the significance of the current situation in selecting a new president who will stand at the universitys helm for years to come. Bennions nine years at SUU have been exemplary in many respects. For example, he has championed the students cause and has helped to bring about d campus expansion. He has displayed the and situation uncanny ability of remembering of nearly everyone he has met. Bennion will be missed for his accomplishments. At the same time, his departure creates an imposing opportunity to evaluate the universitys focus, which will be determined in large part by the individual at the head. A search committee will be formed in the next few weeks and will include faculty members, students and community members. Its task will be determining w hat type of president will fit the universitys needs. Now is the time to begin considering what kind of person what strengths and attributes is really needed to lead SUU. What kind of president would you choose? We recognize the need for an eligible candidate to excel in administration and politics, but especially for being able to oversee students education, both academic and experience-baseWe want a president who will bring a mature balance of power to campus, who will help SUU develop into the responsible university everyone desires it to become by vesting more decision-makin- g power outside the administration and with the faculty senate. We want a president who will work alongside other public universities and representatives to push for better faculty compensation and funding for Utahs critical higher education system, thus supporting current faculty and promoting the recruitment, and especially the retention, of more quality professors. We want a president who is diplomatic in statewide endeavors and on campus, yet has a firm vision of the schools potential and is uncompromising on the vital elements of students academic and extracurricular experience. We ask the search committee to consider every voice and take its responsibility of understanding SUUs needs seriously. We also ask the committee to urge students, faculty members and community members to voice their opinions on what kind of president should be selected. Such an opportunity to directly influence the future of SUU is rare and ought not be treated lightly. I didnt enjoy the article. It was about Power 91s Guitars Unplugged competition. I want to say something because I felt that the article was misleading. The article quoted me as saying, We wanted to make sure everybodys on the same level. I didnt mean by that quote that we dismissed anyone who was too good and could not participate in the competition. The quote meant that Power 91 wanted to make sure the participants were able to play and not embarrass themselves in front of a large audience. I There was a screening process so we could have the best of the best play at the competition. Just like in past years, we want to have the best on stage. Also in the article it mentioned that in last years Unplugged we didnt have auditions. This is not true. For the past three years the participants have auditioned in order to play at Unplugged. Again, we want the best for the competition and for the fans. I just wanted to let people know that we do not weed out the good when it comes to Guitars Unplugged. We try to do the opposite. I think that everyone who participated in this years "Everyone who played deserved to be there and want to thank them" 2 2 The IRB is something that a lot of students must do before they leave SUU. Mason Cottam deserved to win the competition last year, just like Eric Williams deserved to win the competition this year. Everyone who played deserved to be there and I want to thank them. The article seemed insulting to the people who played and I think none of the competitors should have any doubt cast on their talent and ability. We want to better the competition every year and, of course, every year is different because there are different musicians who play. This is why the competition is so great because its not the same every year. Change is built into it and that is a strength. t I the appreciate really Isaac Madson University Journal for covering the event. We look for exposure and ways to improve. The reason for this response is that I just dont want people who read Mondays article to get the wrong impression about our competition. I want to set the record straight.
