Genesis space capsule crashed near Dugvvay Proving Grounds in northwestern Utah Wednesday morning Helicopter pilots maneuvering in the sky over Utah planned to d snag a space package Wednesday as it glided toward the ground, ending a three-yea- r mission sampling the atomic signature of the sun Scientists hoped the capsules instruments would hold a clear record of the tiny bits and pieces the individual atoms that the sun spews constantly into space National Aeronautics and Space 450-poun- Administration researchers expected to find a chemical brew resembling the primordial cloud of gas and dust that collapsed to form the solar system 4 6 billion years ago The project is called the Genesis mission According to NASAs original proposal for the $200 million mission, few differences between the suns hot surface and whats seen on Earth, the moon and planets are expected, based on the assumption that the sun and planets formed from a common mixed reservoir of dust and gas But some evidence, mainly from meteorites and moon rocks, suggests important differences do exist, and researchers had hoped to learn why Two objectives in NASAs roadmap are to learn how the solar system originated and determine how it evolved to its current diverse state, said David Lindstrom, NASAs Genesis program manager, during a news conference Tuesday in Utah Genesis is an important step toward these objectives First, of course, pilots had to catch the capsule Soon after noon EDT, helicopters flown by Hollywood stunt pilots hovered over Utahs salt flats waiting for the capsule to descend beneath its gliding parafoil The capsule planned to fall at about 10 mph, far slower than its initial speed of 24,700 mph, but still fast enough to be tricky ry Pilot Cliff Fleming, from South Coast Helicopters in Santa Ana, Calif, said both pilots and their crews were ready, having practiced the capture technique five times The two retrieval choppers were planned to be accompanied by a military onhelicopter carrying an scene commander NASAs Genesis recovery team chief, Bob Corwin, explained that the parafoil carrying the Genesis capsule wont descend vertically Instead it glides, allowing the pursuing helicopters to approach, fly in formation with it, and then snag it with an hooked pole Once captured, the capsule was suppose to be taken to the ground, the parafoil removed, and the capsule flown to a nearby military base The returning capsule is targeted to Earths atmosphere over Oiegon, open a small parachute at an altitude of 108,000 feet, deploy the bigger parafoil at 22,000 feet, and then drift into Utah That would have ended the er spacecrafts four-ho- iy By MATTHEW LUST com mlustsuujournal Sean Graham and Jesse Simmons appeared in court before Judge Michael G Westfall on Tuesday for status conferences regarding their pending trails involving the murder of a counselor at the residential treatment program they both attended Graham appeared in court without and counsel. the informed Westfall prosecution that both parties had agreed to seek a continuance of two weeks After being informed of the request for continuance by Troy Little, Iron County chief deputy Westfall attorney, said he had wanted to discuss some issues with Grahams attorney but would grant the i 4 consolidation Garrett said he had no intention of filing a counter memorandum I made my arguments in the initial motion, he said I didnt feel they wrote anything that needed to be refuted Now its up to the judge to determine what needs to be done Garrett said he wanted to combine the trials for efficiency Its a matter of simplifying the entire process, he said In both cases, the witnesses are the same, and some of them live out of state I would rather only subpoena them once to come and testify, rather than twice Its also cheaper to do it once than paying for a witness to make the trip twice Barnes said it could be beneficial for his client to be tried separately It depends on several factors, but Garrett I think that on the whole, it would be advantageous for my client, he sdid Simmons and Graham have now spent six months in jail while trial proceedings have taken place Despite Simmons young age, Barnes said his client is doing as well as can be expected Emotionally, he seems to be doing well considering hes 18 years old and the charges against him, Barnes said The Graham and Simmons murder cases are the first murder trials that Garrett has had to prepare as district attorney Garrett said this is the first murder in Iron County for almost four years He also said despite a lack of experience in capital cases, his office is able to meet the demands that a case of this magnitude demands The only difference between a murder trial and another trial is the elements that you have to prove, Garrett said Otherwise, the rules of evidence and preparation procedures dont change much from any other case 4 s ' w. ..T --V fl SOY EL Til nf 1,L' n J - in n'ib a ,ibi i'i i'
