While the debate was somewhat civil, members on both sides took advantage of their opponents by throwing small bombs in cither direction. The topic of public education vouchers allowed both sides to discuss solutions for education problems. The voucher system allows parents who want to send their children to private schools to put a credit toward the tuition with the funding that would have been spent on their child in the public school system. The College Democrats said the system favors the upper class because only they can afford to foot the remainder of the bill to pay for private school tuition. People dont want voucher systems unless theyre in the middle or upper class and want to send their kid to private school but dont want to pay for it, said Tim Justice, a College Democrat. Justice said providing vouchers will only worsen the quality of education in private schools, while College Republicans said they believe vouchers are one way people can save their children from a poor education. Jared Mortensen, a College Republican, said the amount of funding that funnels into an educational institution doesnt correlate with the quality of education that institution produces. Mortensen said SAT scores have dropped 27 points even though the nation has increased funding to education by 600 percent. The two groups also argued about the role the United Nations should play in a post-wa- r world in Iraq. Nate Caplin, a College Republican, said the United States shouldnt trust the United Nations, and many states in the United Nations are represented by tyrannical leaders. The United Nations doesnt have any moral basis for their involvement, Caplin said. He said he believes the United States will be more efficient than the United Nations. However, the College Democrats said they believe the United Nations is designed to protect the sovereign rights of states and should be involved in post-wa- r Iraq. I dont care who has control of the support, as long as it is getting done, Justice said. I guess the question is, why dont we use the U.N? College Republicans also said the rule for criminal action is justified because of its success m California in keeping violent criminals off the streets. College Republican Aaron Miller said even though the systems do have faults, criminals have high recidivism rates, and states have to foot the bill for costly trials. Jessica Irwin, a College Democrat, said she believes rehabilitation isnt happening within By MEG CADY mcadysuujournal because it helps students get to know dieir professors outside of the classroom.
