Even though budgets arc often looked down upon because of their complexity or nature, they can be fairly simple and actually save time and pain in the end. Its harder to deal nil money troubles without a budget than with one, said Natalie Ellis, a sophomore family and consumer sciences major from Pleasant Grove. i budget is very important. Without it, we would go bankrupt. Banks and credit unions often have financial advisers who can help students plan budgets and secure their finances. However, there are some simple tips that anyone can follow to improve his or her budgeting skills. Kathy Croxall, an assistant piofessor of family and consumer sciences, said to begin planning a budget by figuring your expenses and income. Then, sort your expenses into fixed and flexible categories. Fixed expenses are the same each month and include expenses such as car insurance and rent. Flexible expenses are vancd each month and include expenses such as gas and dining costs. Utilities can be placed in either category, although they are usually placed in a fixed expense category. Steve Bryant, a loan officer at Zions National Bank, said, Look at your expenses, rent, food, car insurance, etc., and then allocate income, he said. Ellis said she lists all of her bills first, and then she lists her other expenses. She then allocates a certain -- HIGH: High 80s LOW: Mid 50s THUNDER STORMS 'V" '''' V' amount of money to each category. She said she has three bank accounts to help her keep within her budget: one for bills, one for expenses like gas and diapers, and one for spending. This helps her know how much money she has to spend for each category. Bryant said students should track all of their y expenses for a period and then itemize them. Croxall said this should give students some idea of where their money is going. Often, people find that they spend a great deal of money eating out, she said. For those with children, its important to remember that kids come first, she said. If it comes down to buying diapers or going to a movie, the diapers should get the priority. Another important part of a budget is to make sure to put some money away in savings, Croxall said. Its a good idea to get into the habit of saving now that can be more important than the money itself, she said. Croxall said. Make it Pay yourself first, automatic. Bryant said students should reward themselves with savings. Many students put away ten percent of each paycheck. This can serve as a rainy-da- y fund or emergency money, he said. Croxall also recommended to have some funds that arc yours. Many people think of a budget as the master, not the servant, she said. It should be the other way around. Croxall said the one thing you need to be careful with when budgeting is credit. Credit cards are not the way to balance a budget, she said. ,"" Welcome Week Photo Exhibit: "On Stage", Auditorium, 7 a.m. 11 p.m. Soccer vs Utah State, soccer fields, 5 p.m. Iron County Fair, Parawon 30-da- FORECAST HIGH: High 80s LOW: High 50s PARTLY CLOUDY B' Welcome Week Photo Exhibit: "On Stage", Auditorium, 7 a.m. 11 p.m. FORECAST HIGH: High 80s LOW: High 50s SUNNY Labor Day Recess LiWU LwlJ Continued from Back Page musical and easily the best play I have seen the Utah Shakespearean Festival pioduce in the six years Ive attended.
