Show TIM THE importance OF TREE PLANTING IT is ia difficult to imagine anything that th at would contribute more to the enhancement of the beauty and value of land in this territory than a greater popularization lariza tion of the tree planting industry it need not be confined to the planting and cultivation of trees proper but might also profitably include shrubs and vines of infinite variety sometime some time since this journal suggested the advisability of the le legislature isia enacting a statute designating an arbor day the failure ot of the late assembly to do so was in our opinion a regrettable reg retable omission such fuch a law exists in illinois and the following synopsis of et a proclamation recently issued in accordance with it by gornor governor br oglesby Ua lesby gives a clear idea d ea of its purport and what can be accomplished tinder it this is an extract from from the national live stock sock journal of march gov GOT oglesby this evening issued the first arborday arbor day proclamation ever promulgated in this he first sets out in full f all the act of the last legislature ture directing him to designate an dually to in the spring a day to be observed throughout the state as a day da y for planting trees shrubs and vines about the homes long along the highways and about public grounds within the state and then says to give effect to and to carry into execution the tore fare going set act friday april 18 1888 is hereby designated as arbor day ana and I 1 earnestly commend to the people of the state the observance of said day it it is believed great good will result from an earnest effort by the public to inaugurate agn rate and perpetuate a day tor for the ap special ecial purpose or of planting trees abruns t a and vines it wouly would greatly remt fid to 0 the beauty of our state could arery ery home schoolhouse church highway t and grounds b e ornamented by trees arbors shrubs and aad vines and great benefit would result from planting forest trees which in time would immensely increase the value of our lands should agree to toco cooperate CO operate in this respect a great deal would be accomplished but whether communities shall so 80 co operate or individuals alone undertake to adorn and beautify the state there can be so ae doubt that it the day shall be properly inaugurated and habitually ob observed servel great public and private good will result from its observance in the absence of ft a territorial statute ateon on the subject we see nothing la in the way of the several municipalities taking steps in the direction of tree plan planting UK it t might be done by the passage ot of resolutions by city councils and proclamation of the mayors in unison therewith designating a certain day to be devoted to the purpose indicated of course such measures would necessarily be la in the nature of an invitation luVI tation to the public we believe such a step would meet with wit general response otherwise it might be better still make it more general in that case know of no obstacle that would mg in the way of the designation of a C i and an invitation connected wil wi th h it proceed irom from the governor by mer me of a proclamation it ass aas been proved to a demon sti ste tion that the existence of tito super induces humidity a candidi that bat is greatly needed in this par part the country there are considerable tracts of 1 14 in various sections some of them close proximity to this ibis city thal tha ar present unused and useless be caust the existence to a great degree decree saler stas in the soil certain kinds kind timbers suca as black willo which attains a considerable growt quaking g asp poplar and other tr tra would gro grow w a and na flo flourish uis h the 0 01 I 1 era of sueh such tracts miss a means profit and beauty by not planting ug u such spots tree planting should be encourage by some popular movement |
