Show 'O 1 OiSM 2 Sports & Outdoors SOUTHERN UTAH STATE COLLEGE, CEDAR CITY j i i THE THUNDERBIRD Hardcastle pleased with Kerbs fights first performances start abysmal BY BRENT RICHEY Theres a line from the film Wall Street: Man looks in the abyss theres nothing staring back at him. At that moment man finds his character, and that is what keeps him out of the abyss. I J y 1 y X i s f ;i r H i p ,T L t i 'H i S- O I Gordon Kerbs has found his in the middle of an start in his first year as head women's basketball coach. Some other individual put us in this hole, he said of his teams rough road schedule and difficulty finding a win. Were responsible for getting out of it. Were starting at the bottom and working our way up. Kerbs has spit into the abyss. Im not folding up. His Lady Thunderbirds dropped their fifth straight game Tuesday night loss to in the Centrum an Idaho State, the first contest at home. Tomorrow and Saturday the Lady Birds travel to Long Beach State to face the host club in the first round. The first half of the contest showcased the best shooting of the year for the young team at 62 percent, but SU trailed due to 15 turnovers. The second half was poor shooting and more TOs in a stretch that resulted in only 1 points. Its just a mental lapse, said Kerbs. Weve got some kids who just arent mentally ready to play at this level consistently. 0-- 5 There may not have been a perfect 10 scored at SUSCs Meet the Gymnasts Night, but at least the audience knows what it takes to get one. In addition to educating the crowd on the techical points of the sport, the gymnasts also showed some new skills for this years competition. Im very pleased, said Coach Brent Hardcastle. The gymnasts performed as well if not better than expected for this time of the season. Each of the athletes performed at least one of the events that she will be competing in this season. There were a couple of miscues, but thats the reason we do this kind of thing, said Hardcastle. I got the chance to see the girls perform in a meet situation, and some of the girls really came alive. Intercollegiate competition will begin with BYU in the Centrum on Jan. 11. susc vs. 84-5- 6 - i 39-3- 1 Though an abyss may be a bit of a strong word to describe SUSCs start, its still dark and difficult to see out of, as Heather Sonne fo md out against Idaho State Tuesday. 0-- 5 PAGE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1990 sr U.
