BY JAKE SHEWMAKE Anyone who is looking to trim a few inches or just have a little fun may take part in ASSUSCs open recreation program or the circuit weight training class. ASSUSC Intramural and Open Recreation Director Holly Claphum said, We estimate that (open recreation) is the most g widely-useactivity on campus. It is a great thing to do when youre tense and need to relax. Open recreation activities are free with a student activity card, and are located in the Physical Education Building. Available activities and facilities include raquetball, basketball and volleyball courts; a weight lifting room; an olympic-size- d swimming pool; and daily aerobics classes. Students may take advantage of the facilities during open recreation. Fall quarter open recreation hours are 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Aerobics classes are taught each Monday through Friday at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. class, Additionally, students may join the circuit weight-trainin- g PE 170, a computerized workout program for people who want to get in to shape or stay in shape. It is a combined aerobic and muscle weight-trainin- g program that gives you a complete body workout in 24 minutes, said Coach Brent Hardcastle, program supervisor. About 500 people are enrolled in the program and it has become the most popular class on campus. Two years ago we had one person at the first orientation and this year we had 200, Hardcastle said. class costs $35 and is open to community The members as well as college students. An ID card will be issued upon payment and needs to be presented at each workout. The class lasts 1 1 weeks from the time of enrollment, and students can register at any time during the quarter. If the quarter ends before 1 weeks are completed, an IP is recorded on the students transcript. The IP means the class is in progress and wont affect the students GPA. Upon course completion a grade will be issued based on the 7 number of visits a participant completes visits earns a B, 28 visits or more earns an A. Participants must attend a mandatory orientation held each Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the P.E. gymnasium. At the orientation each students height, weight, age, blood pressure, heart rate and body fat percentage are recorded. The information is fed into a computer program which prints out an optimum workout schedule for each student. The class, held in the P.E. Fitness Center, contains 24 stations and is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. A loudspeaker signals when to start, stop and change stations. Fitness are available throughout the course. Participants are required to wear shoes and shirts. A towel is issued to wipe off the machines upholstery before moving to the next station.
