Sorority seeks house BY IHAB ISSA Phi Alpha Beta plans to move into its own sorority house in June if payment arrangements can be made. Lisa Heaton, president of the organization, stressed the importance of having a house, an issue which has concerned her during the past year. local club is not a part of the national Greek The Beta yet. However, according to Heaton, Phi Alpha organization the sorority has been conducting a series of meetings with President Gerald R. Sherratt in an attempt to convince the school officials to assist the sorority in financing a house. The house will be used as an housing facility benefitting not only SUSC, but also sorority members who choose to live in it, Heaton said. She also added, Having a house is an important asset in building stability and growth. Heaton said the organization is considering a house located near for the house campus and SUSC would be used as a loan. Heaton expressed a deep interest in the house, but said the school officials consider it too large an investment. Heaton said that her organization is working to convince the owners to lower the price. It is an advantage to promote the Greek system, it is essential to the growth of the school. Heaton said. In a big school the Greek organifations have more influence; therefore, the process of getting a house would easier, she said. Not all Greek organizations, however, consider it advantageous to own a residence for members. According to Kimberly Driggs, a second term president for the Chi Sigma Upsilon organization, it would be to their disadvantage to buy a house as long as the organization is a local club. Driggs emphasized the importance of being part of a national charter. If the group becomes nationally chartered, Chi Sigma Upsilon will then help us come up with the money and finance the loan. The size of the school is not an issue as long as we become a part of a national charter, said Driggs. Driggs indicated that a house would generate more problems than benefits. She expressed her concern about house maintenance, payments, and insurance all involved with home ownership. Evening school expands Southern Utah State may expand its evening school offerings in Cedar City to include bachelors degree programs in education and business administration. If theres sufficient interest, we can offer local residents the same outreach programs we have already in place in St. George, Richfield, Kanab, and other southwestern communities, said Phillip C. Carter, associate provost for academic programs. According to Carter, convenience is the key to outreach programs. The courses are tailored to meet the needs of students who cant attend classes during the day, he added. While most of the interest in outreach programs is in business and education, other majors may also be offered. Committments from 20 or 30 people who are starting at pretty much the same time and place in their academic schedules are needed to make the program feasible, Carter said.
