Special invitations have been sent to Cedar High School seniors and their parents and to students who have been enrolled in Student Support Services at Dixie College. Georgia Thompson, assistant vice president for student services, said Project ALTA provides developmental math and English classes, academic advisement and other support to help" students reach their goals. The purpose of the open house, Thompson said, is to help ALTA services, acquaint new and transfer students with Project and to remind the campus community faculty, staff, students of the existence of the project and how it can be of service to students. SUSC student Doug Furlow, 28, is a strong advocate of Project ALTA services. Furlow came to the United States from Central America when he was 13 and went on to graduate from high school and spend some time in a two-yecollege before transferring to SUSC. When I came here my grade point average was 1.56, way below I heard about average, and I was on academic probation, he said. this program that helps students with special problems. I was really struggling, like a person trying to swim against the current, so I went there for help. Furlow has been at SUSC for three years. He is carrying a 2.8 GPA and has completed an associate degree in law enforcement. If all goes well, he will graduate next winter with a bachelors degree in law enforcement and minors in military science and Spanish. He is also a member of the RCTC program and will be commissioned a second lieutenant at the end of June. I came here with a lot of problems, Furlow admits. They (Project ALTA staff) talked to me, helped identify my problems, and as time went on helped me. Special Services help, he said, includes personal counseling along with help with study skills and learning techniques. TRIO programs, Thompson said, were funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Basically the TRIO objective is to help minority students and students who need help to get their skills to the academic college level, enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in an economic and social life..
