Show Opinion SOUTHERN UTAH STATE COLLEGE, CEDAR CITY THE THUNDERBIRD THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1990 PAGE 4 SUSC CONTINUES ITS PURSUIT OF QUALITY students that our on campus There is a belief shared by a few student enrollment institution can now expect a surge in and that somehow the quality of our programs will soar now that were a recognized university. The fact is, as a college, SUSC has been experiencing unprecedented growth, not because of an impending change in institution, SUSC has for years, name, but rather, as a possessed the best faculty, and offered to students the best curriculum in both academics and athletics. Take the School of Education, for instance. It is no mistake that SUSCs education program places 100 percent of their graduates in teaching positions ranging from kindergarten through high school; the program is considered to be the best in the area, according to Quenton Bowler, teacher education department head. Likewise, the School of Business, Technology and Communication, has an unparalleled success rate in placing graduates in good paying jobs, providing them with the experience needed to compete with graduates from across the nation. This is never so evident than in communication. Traditionally a very competitive field, students have the opportunity to get the jump on their competition from other schools by gaining hands-oexperience in radio, television and print journalism. As a result, SUSC communication graduates can step into a position from school, thus a ending the need tor apprenticeship. It goes without saying that the theatre arts department has consistently been setting the pace for SUSCs past success, and will continue to stealthfully do so in the future. The department has a national reputation, evidenced through the worldwide popularity of the Shakespearean Theatre, because of the quality of its faculty; each instructor improves himself either by participating iluoug'nout the summer season with the Shakespearean Theatre, or getting involved in various professional acting engagements across the LJ.S. SUSCs student athle es have much to crow about not only with victories on the playing field, but also in overall grade point average and in the number of athletes who go on to get a degree higher than the number of graduates among the general student population. Whats more, SUSC has added more head coaches and assistant coaches to the states high school athletic programs than any other school statewide, according to Dan Pattison, sports writer for The Salt Lake Tribune, and an SUSC alumnus. The fact is, there isnt a department or activity on campus that hasnt proven itself exemplary while weve been a college. As a university, we can only expect a continuation of the tradition in excellence that weve enjoyed for years. full-tim- e four-yea- r Tri-Sta- te n time-consumi- extra-curricul- ar E53 The Thunderbird VOLUME 84, NUMBER 35 Editor Rachel Talbot Associate Editor Kathleen Midglcy Opinion Director James Spainhower Photo Editor Jeff Dower Arts &. Todays column is by Earle B. Severance, a freshman mapring in theatre arts. Collins, who appear on a stage with a young girl and say shes homeless and ask for our help. Hey Phil, give and let me get back her a cut of your to borrowing money from the government to pay for multi-millio- college. In my entire life, as short as it has been, I have never seen any issue become as clouded as the issue of the homeless has. We are clouding everything with too statistics, and quotable sources. many facts, What we need to do is look at everything we are talking about on a personal level, we need to talk about personal experience. Not only am I disappointed with the amount of attention we suddenly find ourselves giving the homeless, but I also loath the entire collection of social programs, such as welfare, social security, and medicare. All of these things are just increasing the problem and not even coming close to slowing it down. First of all, let us look at welfare. I know a man who worked for the welfare department as an investigator for 16 years. During those years his department of four to five investigators received at least 300 cases a year, 100 percent of which were found to be abusing the system. His conservatwe estimate is that between 40 to 50 percent of all welfare receivers abuse the gift we are giving them. I have no reason to doubt this man, he is my fathei Social Security is another major blight on the g of the nation The government financial takes more money from people so that it can keep those same people more dependant on it as they get older. The government should encourage people to put money away, on their own, in an effort to be more g and improve their standard of living. We need less government involvement in people's personal well-bein- lives. But too much about other social programs, I am here to talk about the homeless. First, let us look at all of the individuals, like Phil holier-than-tho- u Most of the homeless you people are asking me to help dont even deserve my pity. I have driven with employers down the street and asked these vagrants (and I do mean vagrants) if they would like five dollars an hour to do some manual labor. Most would not look up from whatever they were doing with their valuable time or step away from the wall they were standing against. Those that did wanted more money before they would even consider going! All of this may seem a bit harsh, cold, and even ...dont get on my case about the Christian ethic, or mercy, or pity. I have one standard answer to that: God helps those who help themselves. unfeeling to some people. I want it to be that way. see how far we can go in one direction, we cant make the improvements and changes on the present system that are needed. If you think Im bad, why dont we do what some European countries do and just send a garbage truck around the streets to collect the bodies every morning. 1 admit there are a few homeless that do need some help, but they could very easily solve their enire situation. Let them join the armed forces! Free room, board, medical, and they even get paid! And dont get on my case about the Christian ethic, or mercy, or pity. I have one standard answer for that: God helps those who help themselves. Hope to see you in the Real world. Until people |
