The concert is free and open to the public. Dr. Welch is well known for his sense of creative programming, combining serious and entertaining organ works, said Jan Harrison, organ teacher at SUSC and adjunct instructor of music. The recital will be an unusual combination of toccatas and other pieces inspired by various dance rhythms. The selections span a time range of five centuries. These works are by German, English, Swiss, Austrian, French and American composers. Bachs Dorian toccata, Samuel Scheldts Variations on a Galliard by John Dowland and Edward Lemares Tarantella will be among the works performed. Those who attend the Monday evening concert, Harrison said, will hear works rarely heard in church services. Although I wouldnt call myself a dancer, Welch said, I have enjoyed exploring the organ literature for these toccatas and pieces based on dance rhythms. I think that the pieces on the program were written by composers who were intent on having a good time. Welch has been on the UCSB faculty since 1977, where he teaches organ, harpsichord, carillon and courses in music history. Welch holds a doctorate in organ performance from Stanford University and has studied at Brigham Young University, the Mozarteum Akademie in Salzburg, Austria, and with Jean Langlaise in Paris, France. Welch is just returning from a recital at St Hedwigs Cathedral in East Berlin and will also be performing in Salt Lake City at St Marks Episcopal Cathedral Feb. 9, according to Harrison. He has performed extensively throughout the western world, Harrison said. - TBXMOBS 7 & 9 PQ TEEL MAfiirOUAS 7 & 9:15 PQ Baffin? C L GLAMOUR ADVICE!
