Show THE THUNDERBIRD PAGE 8 SUSC THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1989 The High Flying Family Musical Amnesty International chartered here BY MICHELLE LINDSEY All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. This portion of the Declaration of Human Rights is also the standard of the Amnesty International Organization, a newcomer to the SUSC campus this year. The worldwide, non-prof- it organization, based in New York City, has more than 400,000 members in the United States alone and was organized at SUSC by local chapter president Paul Speirs. The main objective of Amnesty International is the preservation and advancement of basic human rights and the abolition of torture and executions, said Speirs. The organization works toward providing basic human rights that coincide with the United States Bill of Rights, such as freedom of press, speech, and religion, as well as life and liberty. It is convenient to have such a large base of the organization here where the rights are already established, said Speirs. Speirs plans to visit various classes at SUSC the organization to students. Why should SUSC students care? We are all human beings and we are all in this together, said Speirs. The focus of the organization on campus will be to inform and educate students, because every justice system is not as good as ours, he said. Amnesty International holds an annual meeting where members choose a country of focus and five subordinate countries according to the various situations and abuse in those countries. As part of the focus, members participate in a letter writing campaign. We write courteous letters to governments. With the thousands of letters being written, we want to leave an impression on the governments, as well as support and help the prisoners of conscience, those being people who have been imprisoned for their beliefs, said Speirs. AI also lobbies the U.S. government to condemn the actions of other governments such as those surrounding Mays student demonstration in Beijings Tiananmen Square. Deans also approved curricular changes in art, behavioral and social sciences, music, media, math and home economics, effective beginning with the new 1990-9- 2 catalog, said Alger. Some of the changes include renumbering Psychology 351 to 305. Weve had a big problem with 351 and 352, said Hinton. He proposed a change dramatic enough that 351 is not a prerequisite for 352. 352 will be the required statistics course for psychology majors, he said, It would go from 3 hours to 5 hours so that psychology majors would only have to take one statistics class. Psychology 351, renumbered as 305, is a more generic class that will be ideal for majors, he non-psycholo- said. Other changes approved by the council were renaming Music 332 as a band class instead of the Scarlet and Black Band, and changing the title of the SUSC Chorale to the Concert Choir.
