Show THE THUNDERBIRD SUSC 13, 1989 MONDAY, NOVEMBER PAGE SOCIETYS WATCHDOG COMMENTARY BY KENNETH REBER COUPON Hanseen manages many marathons The U.S. Army in a promotion ad declares that the Army does more before nine in the morning than most people do in the entire day. However, the Army hasnt met SUSC student Hilary Hanseen. Hilary, an SUSC junior home economiceducation major, contends e with a marathon of interests student, ASSUSC education adviser resident in senator, Juniper Hall, a waitress at Cedar Citys Sizzler restaurant, and a marathon runner. Saturday, Oct. 7, at 6:53 a.m., Hilarys busy agenda found her competing with 1,840 other runners in the 13th Annual St. George Marathon. Yet, while other runners have only had to battle a precipitous extinct volcano found seven miles into the marathon course, Hilarys marathon day was already several hours old. As part of her responsibilities as an ASSUSC senator, Hanseen was on a special homecoming committee overseeing the different activities that had already required several long days prior to the race day. Yet, another lengthy day was clearly in sight for the Orem, Utah native. Hilary always does everything she is assigned, stated ASSUSC Academic Vice President Retta Judd. Hilary enjoys a busy schedule. Commenting on Hanseens daily performance, ASSUSC President Jan Shelton said, shes very, very involved and concerned about others. Hanseens concern for others was reflected near the starting line before the kiss of dawn. While other competitors were preoccupied with last minute stretching and attempting to keep warm in the chilly mountain region, the veteran marathoner was busy relocating SUSCs four other novice runners closer to the battle front. As the masses started racing on the downward course toward the finish line in downtown St. George, elbows were flying in all directions attempting to gain their owners that extra edge. Yet, despite the jumbled confusion of the race, Hilary calmly maneuvered back and forth eluding confrontations. Concerning Hilarys poised temperament, Judd had this to say, Hilary never has a bad attitude or feelings towards others. The early jostling of runners was extremely hard for Hilary who was fighting a injured knee, the night before I had a prayer with my parents that my knee would be alright. Afterward, I knew that it was alright. It was a miracle, a still excited Hanseen later said. As all marathoners can attest, several battles must be fought during the grueling 26.2 mile race. A damaged knee was just one of the personal conflicts that the petite runner encountered. During the early stages an upset stomach caused Hilary to lose precious minutes needed to accomplish her personal time goal of under 3:50. Despite the several rolling hills through Snow Canyon that quietly challenged the remaining runners, all would agree, the runners worst obstacle comes when they run into The Wall, the unseen psychological barrier faced by all runners in response to maximum physical exertion. Hilary ran into this wall around mile 18. I wanted to quit really bad, but decided that I couldnt, I had too many friends supporting me, said Hilary. Near the 22 mile marker near the city limits Hanseen escaped the invisible demon as she met up with another Utah Valley runner. Talking about the marathon and friends they shared in common, the two runners paced each other into the city. With a final burst of speed down the home stretch, Hilary ran under the large Rolex clock in the city park finishing 553 overall with a time of 3:24:55; a personal record of over 30 minutes for the talented lady. For her efforts, she was rewarded with a trophy in recognition of her sixth place finish in the womens open division, which comprised the largest number of female runners. for Hilary. Her mind However, the taste of victory was short-live- d soon drifted back to Cedar City where another marathon of activities awaited her, checking on her dorm floor and supporting the Birds gridiron warriors. Following an shift at Sizzler, Hilary would conclude her marathon-styl- e day by attending SUSCs Homecoming Dance. Just another typical day in the life of Hilary Hanseen.
