Show THE THUNDERBIRD sports & Outdoors Birds will try to avoid letdown If ever a football team was justified in its frustrations, California Lutheran, which will host SUSC this week in Thousand Oaks, Calif., could be that team. The Kingsmen and Thunderbirds will square off Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MDT in a nonconference game. Five times over the years SUSC and Cal Lutheran have met. The Birds have come away winners all five times, but only once has SUSC won by more than seven points. That was way back in 1964 when the Birds came away with a 26-- 0 win. The Cal Lu frustration has grown in the last three years when Southern Utah Lias sneaked away with three 8 in 1987, in 1986, wins: 34-3- 1 and 24-2- 1 last year. Scores in the last minute of the final quarter have been the difference each time. Is Cal Lutheran jinxed? Consider: In 1986, when SUSC won 34-3the winning touchdown was scored with 31 seconds left in the game. In 1987, when the Thunderbirds nudged out a 23-1- 8 victory, the came with 45 touchdown winning seconds left in the final quarter. Last year SUSC went to Kelvin Minefee for the winning points on a seven-yar- d dash' with 31 seconds left 23-1- potential for us to let down because this is not a WFC game and because loss at Santa Clara he was the teams leading rusher with 66 yards on 12 we are coming off a huge win. Second, carries. going to be remembering those close losses each of the last three CLU is CLUs top rusher is Dean Henderson. His statistics are not overwhelming, but Shoup counts on him for a consistent 60-7- 0 yards a contest. The top receiver is Shane Hawkins, who hauls in an average of nearly four receptions a game. Probably the strength of the CLU team is their rushing defense, said Bishop. They are particularly strong up the middle against the straight ahead stuff. years. CLU under Shoup has traditionally been a passing team. This year, however, the Kingsmen are spending considerable more time than usual on the ground. But the pass is still the primary weapon. Shoup alternates three quarterbacks. Expected to see the most action against SUSC is Dan Nagelmann, considered the best passer of the trio. Against Cal State Hayward two weeks ago, he completed 15 of 22 passes for 239 yards and two TDs. He will also run if necessary. Last week in a 38-1- 5 SUSC is hoping its varied and efficient offensive performance last week will continue. We just did a lot of things well last week, notes Bishop. WESTERN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE STANDINGS ALL GAMES CONFERENCE 1, on the clock. see a double danger this year in the Cal Lutheran game, said Coach I Jack Bishop. First there is the THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1989 PAGE 7 Players given WFC honors A rare double was accomplished by a pair of SUSC football players for their efforts last week as both Rick Carter and Tim Nicolodemos were named player of the week in the WFC. Both played key roles in the 36-2- 6 Thunderbird upset victory of Portland State last Saturday. PSU is the two-tim- e defending WFC champ that had not lost a WFC match in three seasons. Carter, this weeks offensive player of the week, is a senior quarterback from Arcadia, Calif. Nicolodemos, the defensive player of the week, is a sophomore defensive back from South Jordan. Both Carter and Nicolodemos had outstanding games in probably one of the biggest victories in recent football at SUSC, said Head Coach Jack Bishop. Nicolodemos made 13 tackles, including five solo takedowns, and intercepted two Viking passes. One came in the end zone as PSU was threatening to score before the half. Carter completed 18 of 31 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, as he directed the Birds to 440 yards of offense and did not turn the ball over. He also combined with Vike QB Darren DelAndrae to generate WFC records for first downs (65), passing first downs (40) and passing yards (655). 6-- 6-- MASQUE CLUB, ASSUSC AND THE DEPARTMENT 1, 190-pou- 2, 190-pou- nd nd OF THEATRE ARTS AND DANCE PRESEN Classified Thunderbird Classifieds must be submitted to our offices in Library 103.
