Show Sports & THE THUNDERBIRD outdoors THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1989 PAGE 11 To stay alive, SU must stop Vike offense Harriers will take time off before region Like a Halloween alley cat, Southern Utah States football team is still alive in the chase for the championship of the Western Football Conference. However, Saturday the Thunderbirds, whose 4 record indicates they have been treated unkindly, will be facing their final chance (ninth life) to salvage hopes for a conference title this year.' and SUSC will host league-leadin- g two-tim- e defending WFC champion Portland State University in its attempt to stay mathematically alive. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. in Thunderbird Stadium. Portland State will bring a 0 conference record into the game. The Vikings are the leagues only unbeaten team. In all games, PSU is Southern Utah is 4 in all games, but in the WFC, the Thunderbirds have a 1 mark. Our chances still look great in the conference race, Jack Bishop, SUSC head coach, says. We are in control of our own destiny. With a win against Portland State, we are right in the thick of it for the WFC title. Even with a loss which we arent considering at this time we can still finish in the upper echelons of the conference. The remaining schedule for the Birds is conducive to Bishops optimism. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, one of the three preseason conference favorites, will be playing SUSC in 2-- 3-- 5-- 2. 2-- Cedar City; and after meeting Portland State, the Thunderbirds will have already met the other two, the Vikings and Sacramento State. Almost certainly the remainder of the WFC will be cheering for SUSC in Saturday's game. A Thunderbird win keeps Portland State from clinching at least a tie for its third consecutive title; it also keeps other teams, besides the Birds, alive for at least a piece of the championship. We still think we are a good team, said Bishop. We arent sure what went wrong in the second half last week (a 42-- 7 loss to Weber State after SUSC led 0 at intermission), but we think the Portland State game gives us a good chance to rebound. The Vikings get most of their success d offense that because of a 423.1 of an gobbles up yards average per game. Even after the loss early in the season of Curtis Delgardo, the WFCs offensive player of the year last year, Portland has still been rolling along offensively. Burnell Harvin, the junior replacement for Delgardo, has gained over 100 yards rushing in each of the last four Viking outings. Last week against Cal State Northridge, he picked up an impressive 172 yards on 31 carries. Harvin does almost all the ball carrying for coach Pokey Allens club. To make the passing game go, Allen uses Darren DelAndrae as the tosser 7-- high-powere- 6-- 1, 195-pou- nd and Rinaldo Shakelford and Greg Evers as the primary receivers. d Shackelford, a sophomore speedster, averages an amazing 27.7 yards per reception on 25 catches. Evers, a d has 27 junior, receptions for an 17.3 average of yards per catch. Harvin and tight end John Miller (6-210, junior) are also targets for DelAndrae, who completes over 57 percent of his passes. They have the type of offensive balance which can really test us at defense, Bishop said. They also have the ability to come up with the big play. We cannot afford to make mistakes and still expect to win against this kind of team. We really want to keep their offensive unit off the field. The Vikings defensive statistics are almost a mirror image of their offensive stats. They give up a few more yards per game in the air than they do on the ground (152.3 rushing and 215.9 passing). Overall, opponents average a moderate 368.2 yards. Some haunting injuries have left the Thunderbirds aching defensively, particularly among the linebackers and defensive backs. Damon Olsen, inside linebacker, and Leo Biggs, outside linebacker, are both expected to miss Saturdays game. Both are starters and team leaders. Quarterback Rick Carter is expected to play, but he could be hampered by a bruised knee. 6-- 179-poun- 0, 6-- 2, 190-poun- An unwanted three weeks of no competition is the probable future for Southern Utah States mens and womens cross country squads before the NCAA District Seven meet November 3, in Salt Lake City. We really dont want that big layoff before the district meet, Joe Lopour, SUSC cross country coach, says. We are scrambling in an attempt to find somewhere to run, but this is a bad time of the year. Most teams are involved in their conference meets. Daily workouts will continue, of course, but competition is necessary to keep runners sharp, according to the veteran coach. SUSCs women finished a close fourth in a five-teameet hosted last week at Pocatello, Idaho, by Idaho State University. The Thunderbird men finished a more distant fifth among six teams entered in that division of the ISU meet. For the fourth time in four meets this fall David Dix and Mary Gribble finished first among SUSC runners in their respective divisions. Gribble, a freshman from Provos Timpview High, however, is being pushed increasingly by Jill Anderson, a junior from Grantsville. Last week Gribble finished only five seconds ahead of Anderson. 11 ' m , Cruiso Ship Jobs Women. Summer Classified Thunderbird. Classifieds must be submitted to our offices in Library 103.
